Donald V. Watkins The silence coming out of Tuscaloosa regarding Megan Rondini's case has gone from deafening to downright shameful. No law enforcement or University of Alabama official has disputed any of the facts laid out in my exclusive series of articles in Megan's case. It is apparent by now that a lot of good and decent professionals who are associated with local law enforcement agencies in Tuscaloosa are just as sick about Megan's ordeal as we are. The facts disclosed in my articles would be nearly impossible to uncover without the substantial assistance of dedicated and honest professionals in the law enforcement community and members of the University family who want justice in Megan's case.
President Stuart Bell, Chancellor C. Ray Hayes, and the University Board of Trustees have rendered themselves impotent in this matter. They do not have the independence, courage, or backbone to stand up for Megan Rondini. They have not been given permission to do so by the power players in Tuscaloosa. To them, it is more important to "suck up" to the Bunn family, the members of the University President's Cabinet, and big money donors than to pursue criminal justice in Megan's case.
Furthermore, no public official in Alabama has openly stood up for Megan. Steve Marshall, Robert Bentley's handpicked attorney general, has been missing in action on Megan's alleged rape and subsequent death since the June 22nd BuzzFeed News article on her ordeal. Marshall has found it more useful to devote his time and energy to running for a full term in office. His campaign promise to be "tough on crime" seems to ring hollow in Megan's case.
