Baseball is a kid's game, but there's only one plaque at Coopers-town with the name "Kid" stamped out in bronze to keep the years at bay. That makes Gary Carter pretty special, and makes a serious challenge out of trying to describe his casual charisma in just a few words.

Here's how the Baseball Hall of Fame summed it up on Carter's nameplate in 2003, when the 29-year Palm Beach Gardens resident made the game's ultimate all-star team:
"An exuberant on-field general with a signature smile who was known for clutch hitting and rock-solid defense over 19 seasons."
