The Campaign Against Women - NYTimes.com - Republicans seem immune to criticism. In an angry speech last month, John Boehner, the House speaker, said claims that his party was damaging the welfare of women were “entirely created” by Democrats. Earlier, the Republican National Committee chairman, Reince Priebus, sneered that any suggestion of a G.O.P. “war on women” was as big a fiction as a “war on caterpillars.”
Here Comes Nobody - NYTimes.com - Maureen Dowd - I ALWAYS liked that the name of my religion was also an adjective meaning all-embracing. I was a Catholic and I wanted to be catholic, someone engaged in a wide variety of things. As James Joyce wrote in “Finnegans Wake:” “Catholic means ‘Here comes everybody.’ ” So it makes me sad to see the Catholic Church grow so uncatholic, intent on loyalty testing, mind control and heresy hunting. Rather than all-embracing, the church hierarchy has become all-constricting.
Alabama Governor Approves Immigration Law Change He Opposed - Bloomberg - Republican Governor Robert Bentley approved changes to Alabama’s immigration law a day after he said the measure was unacceptable because it requires the state to post online the names of illegal immigrants who are arrested. The legislation, signed by Bentley today, keeps in place most of a crackdown approved last year that the Obama administration is challenging in court as unconstitutional. Bentley threatened to reject the measure in a news conference yesterday. He also told reporters he wanted lawmakers to remove a provision of the original law requiring schools to check the citizenship status of students, and to get rid of the new provision about posting names online. Keeping those provisions would damage the state’s image, he said. Bentley had called a special session of the Legislature, starting yesterday, to revise the legislation. No lawmaker introduced the changes he was seeking.
