Jonathan Krause says New York Mets legend Gary Carter was a big help in his winning fight over leukemia - NYPost.com - My mother reached out to Jay Horwitz in the Mets front office and arranged for me to meet Gary before a home game in the summer of 1988. Weakened and fattened by chemotherapy, without hair, I met Gary outside the Mets dugout before the game. There, he signed a baseball with the inscription “To Jonathan. Get well soon! Keep the faith. Best of luck. God Bless, Gary Carter.”

'Kid' lived a life of grace and giving | FOX Sports - Bob Klapisch -Carter was a Met who lived beyond the excesses of the '80s. There were no drugs in his world, no booze, no girlfriends on the side. Kid was straight out of Ozzie and Harriet, faithful to his wife, Sandy, devoted to his children, always smiling, bestowing corny nicknames upon anyone who came his way.

Joe Posnanski » The Kid « Everyone assumed that Gary Carter was going to play college football. He had twice been a Punt, Pass and Kick finalist — he would always say that he should have won the second time, but he slipped on the ice in the bitter cold of Green Bay — and he had a scholarship waiting for him at UCLA. He looked the part of the star quarterback; he would say that his dream was to be the next Joe Namath.

New York Mets great Gary Carter dies at age 57 - Tom Verducci - SI.com - Gary Carter, the light of the Mets -There was, despite resentment from inside his clubhouses, nothing phony about Carter, and nothing given easily to him. He was the same off camera as on: optimistic, faithful, kind-hearted, philanthropic. It drove some people nuts that Carter played every day with the joy as if it were the opening day of Little League. Even that nickname, "Kid, " was minted with some derisiveness by jaded Expos veterans when Carter, in his first spring training camp, in 1973, had the nerve to run hard on every sprint and bring enthusiasm to every drill.
