AL.com reporter John Archibald tried to portray me as a racist with a fake “kick white people’s ass” quote that he attributed to me for the first time in an article he published on November 29, 2018. Archibald hurt a lot of innocent Watkins family members with this failed effort to smear me.
Of course, I never made the racist comment Archibald attributed to me and it does not appear anywhere in the May 12, 1991 article he co-wrote and published at the time he says I made the comment.
Archibald readily admits he cannot prove I made this racist comment. In an article published on New Year’s Eve, Archibald said, “I sure hope he did say it, because I put those words in his mouth and if they’re wrong I did him a profound disservice.”
Archibald’s retreat from attributing the “kick white people’s ass” comment to me as a statement of fact, to “I can’t prove [Watkins] said it,” to “I sure hope he did say it,” is damning. His attempt to paint me as a racist has collapsed. Yet, Archibald has refused to retract this fake quote or apologize for publishing it.
I am now being smeared by Archibald based upon the "hope" that I actually made this racist comment. I cannot believe these words actually came out of the mouth of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner for Commentary.
This unprecedented standard of journalism must be reported to the Pulitzer Prize Committee, as it calls the entire body of Archibald's award-winning work into question. If he lied on me in his November 29, 2018 article, who else did he lie on in his award-winning body of work?
