At Gary Carter’s Memorial, Remembrances of Baseball, Faith and Family - NYTimes.com - Andrew Keh - “I gotta say, he idolized me,” said the Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, drawing laughter in the sanctuary. “But as we sit here tonight, I feel inadequate with the things he accomplished — the family, the pastors, the friends, the respect — to think about that smile, to think about the person he was.” Bench said Carter had always wanted to manage in the major leagues. “Nobody was that smart to hire him,” he said.
