It’s not the first time Florida State has been mentioned as a possible SEC member. In fact, in the late 1980s the program was invited to the league, according to Bowden. However, Florida State eventually opted for the Atlantic Coast Conference, joining that league in 1991.
“We were invited and they thought automatically we would join them, but we had applied for 30 years and they wouldn’t take us,” Bowden said. “We had our opportunity to go ACC, SEC or Big East. We had a couple of offers.”
Bowden said most of the professors and school administrators at Florida State, at the time, had more of an ACC background, pushing a move to that conference. In addition, officials felt that league could strengthen more of the Seminoles’ athletics team, especially basketball.
“They wanted us to get in there to uplift the football, which we have,” Bowden said. “It is better. (We wanted) them to lift up our basketball and last year we were in Final Eight.”
While he doesn’t believe Florida State will make a move to the SEC, he does believe it is a justifiable move.
“Florida State easily deserves to be in the SEC,” Bowden said. “They are 150 miles to Gainesville (University of Florida), Georgia is just north, Auburn is a little northwest … we are in the middle of it, but the Atlantic Coast Conference has a lot to offer.
