Investigators: Explosives found in hostage bunker; kidnapper shot first - U.S. News - NBCNews.com - By Matthew DeLuca and Gabe Gutierrez - According to a law enforcement source close to the investigation, two explosives -- one inside the bunker and one in the ventilation pipe -- were found at the scene. - The source said four members of the rescue team approached the bunker's hatch Monday, where the captor, 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, was expecting a delivery. - He had received food and other items intended for the boy in previous days. This time, however, the team opened the hatch and dropped a "distractionary device" -- more commonly known as a flashbang. - Dykes was disoriented, but managed to fire off one shot. The rescue team fired back -- shooting Dykes dead -- and saved the boy.

Small Town Wins Its Standoff With a Kidnapper - NYTimes.com - Campbell Robertson and Robbie Brown - Early ideas were proposed and dropped. Filming the scene from across the highway was a man named Rickey Stokes, a local bail bondsman who runs a blog on happenings in the area, RickeyStokesNews.com. Officials invited Mr. Stokes over, and discussed having him either go into the bunker with a camera, or teach a female F.B.I. agent to use his camera and go in. - Both of those notions were scrapped quickly. In any case, Mr. Dykes, wary of being tricked, insisted that his speech be live-streamed, not prerecorded. - Kirke Adams, the district attorney for Dale County who had been called to the scene from coaching high school girls’ soccer practice, said Mr. Dykes never gave an inch. - “The demand he made was impossible to accomplish in the way he wanted it done,” Mr. Adams said. “And he would accept no alternative.”
