Alabama Power Company and the Southern Company ran one of the most sophisticated racketeering enterprises in modern history. Their RICO activities crossed state lines on numerous occasions and were replicated in multiple states. Matrix and Joe Perkins handled "dirty tricks" for the RICO enterprise. They were paid handsomely for this work, "without invoicing." In 2022, Jeff Pitts, Matrix's former CEO, acknowledged Perkins' racketeering conduct, extortion, and abuse of the legal process in a formal court pleading. Some local, state and federal law enforcement officials in Alabama were complicit in quite a lot of the racketeering activities. Money changed hands, and they looked the other way. Many betrayed the public trust.
