In 2013, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley launched an aggressive attack against me for challenging his reckless destruction of Alabama State University, the institution of higher education where my father spent 20 years as its president. However, Bentley made a fundamental mistake: He did not know my character, personal value system, work ethic, or the Watkins family’s 186-year history in America.
I have worked in regulated industries in America and abroad since 1973. As part of the regulatory process, I am required to submit to “character and fitness” reviews all of the time. These reviews have occurred in 42 U.S. states and 47 foreign countries. Additionally, my corporate activities outside the U.S. have complied with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (“FCPA”) since 1978. The FCPA prohibits a wide array of illegal conduct, such as bribery and kickbacks, when an American company operates in foreign markets.
My waste-to-energy company has one of the toughest FCPA compliance programs in the world. We have never been cited for any violation of FCPA regulations that govern our business conduct. Our nearly four decades of experience with the FCPA compliance program taught me how to look for and detect the kind of engrained public corruption practiced by Robert Bentley, Rebekah Mason, and their “dark money” cronies. Because Bentley and Mason were “power drunk” in 2013, 2014 and 2015, they took their public corruption to a level unparalleled to any criminal scheme I have seen as a lawyer who specialized in white collar crimes for more than 40 years.
Bentley and his chief legal advisor, David Byrne, initiated investigations into my personal and business affairs by the Alabama State Banking Department, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Reserve Bank, Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Alabama Bureau of Investigation. Through these collective investigations, agents from these regulatory and law enforcement agencies scrutinized every aspect of my personal and business affairs that took place from the year 2000 to the year 2015. Though each investigation went nowhere, Bentley did not care. He simply wanted me punished for criticizing his Administration and for exposing his extramarital affair with Mason, as well as his scheme to defraud taxpayers and campaign donors.
Bentley engaged in the "art of war" against me, but he did not know his declared “enemy”. There are no more rocks or spitballs Bentley can throw in my direction. As a result of Bentley’s vindictiveness, I am probably one of the most investigated Americans in U.S. history.
Fortunately, I have always lived my life in a way that complies with all applicable laws, rules and regulations governing my personal conduct and business affairs. I take great pride in my personal integrity. I got this value system attribute from my parents. Bentley did not know these facts about me when he launched his unsuccessful attacks to destroy my name, character, and business reputation.
I know Bentley and his personality type very well. I also recognize Bentley’s pattern and practice of public corruption. I have seen this criminal conduct many times in the U.S. and abroad. Robert Bentley is covered with the soiled juices and strong stench of engrained public corruption.
