For better or worse, the team gained a reputation for humorlessness with its response to homers by young stars during the regular season. But you’d figure their deep and passionate respect for the game would allow at least one of them to dignify a retired local legend by catching a ceremonial pitch before a postseason series. Instead, the players seem petty, unwilling to stomach criticism from a future Hall of Famer but unable — by luck or by construction — to prove him wrong on the field.
