Apple gives away software in challenge to Microsoft - USATODAY - If you buy an Apple device, you have to pay up. But as of Tuesday a lot of the company's software is free, a big change that steps up pressure on Microsoft. Apple announced that it is giving away its new Mavericks X operating system at an event in San Francisco. The new OS will work on Macs dating back to 2007.
