Former Paul Bryant associate Billy Varner dies | al.com - Billy Varner, a former University of Alabama Police Department officer whose life was closely associated with the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant, died Monday after a long illness. - Varner worked for years as the late Alabama coach’s driver and valet and perhaps knew the icon better than anyone. - “I admire him as much as anybody I have ever known,” said Linda Knowles, Bryant’s former secretary.
