For Mets, Whispers to Build From Within - NYTimes.com - Harvey Araton - Build it and “he” will come. In so many words, that was Darryl Strawberry’s message on the day the 2012 Mets memorialized Gary Carter before launching their era of enforced frugality with a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. Strawberry fondly recalled another opening day, 1985, when Carter made his debut with the Mets and homered off St. Louis’s Neil Allen in the 10th inning at Shea Stadium for a 6-5 victory.
