Atlanta Braves Continue to Raise Awareness and Funds for
Southeastern Tornado Relief Efforts with “Alabama Day” This Saturday, July 30
This Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will partner with the city of Tuscaloosa to host “Alabama Day” at Turner Field in an effort to continue raising money and awareness for those affected by the tornados that caused so much devastation throughout Braves Country earlier this season.
In May, the Atlanta Braves partnered with The Salvation Army, their flagship radio stations, 680 the Fan and Rock 100.5, corporate partners and their minor league teams to raise money, awareness and support for the Southeastern tornado relief efforts. The Braves began their efforts by donating $100,000 to The Salvation Army, and this Saturday, the Braves will continue to raise awareness and funds on “Alabama Day” at the ballpark.
Fans also stepped up to the plate in May, donating more than $11,000 through a Text to Give campaign and donations to the Salvation Army at Braves home games. Fans also donated thousands of items to help the tornado victims at Express Oil Change locations in Atlanta, while Coca-Cola Recycling provided collection bins, and Atlanta Peach Movers facilitated delivery of the items.
This Saturday at Turner Field:
· From 5:45-6:30p.m. in Monument Grove, Craig Kimbrel, a Huntsville, Alabama native, will sign autographs for fans who make a $20 donation to “Tuscaloosa Forward,” a strategic rebuilding plan to support long-term recovery efforts in the City of Tuscaloosa and surrounding communities.
· Fans from Alabama can show an Alabama driver’s license or College ID to receive a discounted ticket at Turner Field Ticket Windows. Upper Box tickets will be $12 (regularly $24) and Outfield tickets will be $20 (regularly $35).
· Proceeds from a silent auction in Fan Plaza and at section 202 will be donated to the Tuscaloosa Forward tornado relief efforts. Alabama sports memorabilia, including footballs, photos, helmets and prints signed by Nick Saban, Gene Chizick, Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, Cam Newton, Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson and more will be auctioned, as well as memorabilia signed by Atlanta Braves with ties to Alabama including Tim Hudson, David Ross, and Kimbrel.
· The Salvation Army will collect donations in Monument Grove from the time gates open at 4:30 until the end of the second inning.
· The Braves will provide tickets and host 100 Salvation Army Disaster Relief Volunteers for the game
· Information on how to text a donation will run in stadium on the Turner Field LED boards throughout the game (Text “Give” to 80888, to donate $10 to The Salvation Army)
· On behalf of the Atlanta Braves Foundation and Braves fans, Braves team president John Schuerholz and pitcher Craig Kimbrel, will present a check for $111,000 to the Salvation Army in an on field presentation before the game.

Hall of Famers Pray For Mets' Carter - NYPost

Hall of Famers pray for Mets' Carter - NYPost / Kevin Kernan
excerpts ..
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- This is all you need to know about The Kid.
Bert Blyleven, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame tomorrow along with Roberto Alomar, got a call from Gary Carter. "He apologized because he couldn't be here," Blyleven told The Post yesterday. "It was pretty touching."

Carter, 57, could not make it to Cooperstown because he is in Florida battling glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. In a few weeks, the former Mets great should know where he stands in this fight of his life.
His fellow Hall of Famers have been hit hard by Carter's illness and the deaths in the past year of Bob Feller, Sparky Anderson, Duke Snider, Harmon Killebrew and Dick Williams.

"I don't even feel like being here," a somber Johnny Bench said. "I'm doing it for Bert and Roberto. It's just the worst year ever. I was hoping Gary would be here. I texted him yesterday and he responded."

Blyleven and Carter come from similar backgrounds.
"Gary and I grew up in Southern California," Blyleven said. "He's a couple years younger than me. We've always been good friends. He's just a good Christian man and our prayers go out to Gary, his wife Sandy and his family.
"Gary is one of these guys who wakes up every day and is thankful he is awake. He appreciates every day on this earth. That's his enthusiasm. You run into people who are just kind of there. Gary is so much more than just there."
-
The hotel overlooks pristine Otsego Lake and the beautiful Leatherstocking Golf Course, a Norman Rockwell painting. On this day the sky is blue, the mountains so green.

"It's a gorgeous day," Bench said, "but not without Gary's smile."

Jarrod Massey: FBI may be pursuing as many as 20 more people in a corruption investigation | Birmingham News

Jarrod Massey: FBI may be pursuing as many as 20 more people in a corruption investigation | al.com

excerpt ..
Former Country Crossing lobbyist Jarrod Massey said this afternoon that there might be as many as 20 other targets of a corruption investigation that FBI agents may pursue after the State House vote-buying trial.

Massey disclosed the tidbit this afternoon during his cross-examination, but no additional information was given.

This was not the first time the idea that this trial might not be the end to the investigation has come up during testimony. Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley said previously on the witness stand that he probably would be asked to testify during other trials.

Why some dissatisfied users are shunning Facebook -- CNN

Why some dissatisfied users are shunning facebook -- CNN / by Blake Snow

excerpt ..
(CNN) -- There's no denying the cultural impact of Facebook. It has united almost 700 million people, including most of you reading this, becoming the greatest social introduction platform the world has ever seen.

But there are also some recent signs of "Facebook fatigue." There is only so much you can do to socialize online, especially after you've exhausted your friend list. Some people also complain they're spending so much time on Facebook that they're short-changing the rest of their lives.

Evidence suggests a small but increasing number of users -- at least in North America, where Facebook use is especially saturated -- may be shunning the site. The site lost more than 7 million active users in the United States and Canada last month, according to data from the blog Inside Facebook, although Facebook disputes those figures.

Others are consciously reducing the time they spend on the site.

Dothan city school board approves contract for new superintendent - Dothan Eagle
excerpt ..
The Dothan City School Board approved a three-year employment contract on Monday for new city school superintendent Tim Wilder.

The contract sets base pay and other terms of Wilder’s employment, and includes performance incentives.
Under the contract, Wilder will be paid $141,000 for his first year as superintendent, $148,000 for his second year and $155,000 for his third year.

Wilder currently makes $100,000 per year as superintendent of the Gulf County Schools in Florida. Current Dothan City School Superintendent Sam Nichols said Monday that he currently makes about $147,000.

Wilder’s contract also sets up performance incentives for the new superintendent.

Bud Selig rejects Dodgers TV contract, nullifying McCourt divorce deal - LATimes

Bud Selig rejects Dodgers TV contract, nullifying McCourt divorce deal - LATimes / Bill Shaikin

excerpt ..
Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday rejected a proposed television contract between the Dodgers and Fox Sports, invalidating a divorce settlement between Frank and Jamie McCourt and all but challenging Frank McCourt to surrender the team or sue.

Selig rejected the contract on the first business day after the McCourts announced a settlement contingent upon approval of that contract.
Selig did not strip Frank McCourt of ownership of the Dodgers. But McCourt has said for months that approval of the Fox contract was critical for the Dodgers' financial health.

In a statement released by Major League Baseball, Selig said he had provided McCourt "an expansive analysis of my reasons for rejecting this proposed transaction." Specifically, the statement mentioned that the Dodgers-Fox deal was "structured to facilitate the further diversion of Dodgers assets for the personal needs of Mr. McCourt."

One provision of a divorce settlement reached last week between McCourt and ex-wife Jamie would have diverted almost half the immediate payment on the television contract to them and their attorneys. The upfront payment was to be $385 million, with up to $173.5 million reserved for the McCourts and their attorneys.

ICANN to allow new generic 'dot-brand' domains -- CNNMoney

Posted by The Meck

excerpt ..
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The trusty old Internet addresses we know and love -- the .coms, .nets, .orgs -- are about to get some new competition.

Global Internet regulators met Monday in Singapore to finalize rules for a major expansion of "generic top-level domains," that will clear the way for new offerings like .law, .coke or .nyc. Sites with those endings are expected to start rolling out late next year.

"Today's decision will usher in a new Internet age," said Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of ICANN's Board of Directors. "We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration."

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers -- the non-profit, global coordinator of the Internet's naming system -- has for years been kicking around the idea of suffixes for brand names, cities and general keywords.
