Dothan Ala. Native, Matt Cain, Giants' Starting Pitcher For World Series Game 2 Tonite - Oct 28, 2010

Since I last wrote about Giants' starting pitcher, Matt Cain, Dothan, Al native
starting in the NLCS vs the Phillies .. several friends including Mr. Schmitz and
Brad Sherwood have asked me, How long did Matt Cain live in Dothan?

I contacted my good friend Bob Nightengale, a longtime, excellent baseball writer
for USA Today.
Bob is covering the World Series, as always, and I asked him to ask Matt about Dothan, Al. his birthplace.
Bob just talked with Matt Cain in the Giants clubhouse and reports Matt said he lived in Dothan:
'Just for a couple of years.'

Matt Cain's record in 2010: 13-11 with a 3.14 ERA. A workhorse with 223 innings.
He's 1-0 this postseason [LCS win over Phils] and has pitched 13 and 2/3 scoreless innings.
Cain was a 1st Round pick of the Giants in 2002 and made his ML debut in 2005 at age 20.
He turned 26 on Oct 1st.

This is Matt Cain's 1st World Series and to my knowledge, the 1st time a Dothan Al. native
 is a starting pitcher in the World Series.

Dothan Al Native, Matt Cain, Starting Pitcher in NLCS

Matt Cain is the starting RH pitcher for the SF Giants today in the NLCS.
He was born in Dothan, Ala [ The Meck's birthplace and hometown].
Matt Cain is one of the best pitchers in the National League.
He graduated from Houston High School in Germantown Tenn.
Cain was a 1st Round pick of the Giants in 2002. His ML debut was in 2005 at age 20.

I like the Giants mainly because they have one of the best mgrs in the game, Bruce Bochy.
And he's a great guy. Had the privelege of knowing Bochy when he managed the SD Padres.
He's a classy, kind man. Bochy knows how to communicate with people.
And he knows how to treat people and his players with class.
That translates into winning .. no matter what you're doing.
Bruce Bochy reminds me a lot of Bobby Cox.

The Giants have been my NLCS pick for several months.
Their starting and relief pitching makes them very capable of winning it all.
No one believed any team had a chance vs the Phils' pitching.
I'm picking the Giants to win the NLCS and the World Series.
NLCS Game 3 started today at 4/3ct on Fox.

The Meck Report: Vanderbilt Coaching Legend Roy Skinner Passes Away Suddenly

I got the sad news last nite from my friend, Chris Skinner Fox, her Dad, Roy Skinner,
had suddenly passed away.
After a week stay in the hospital in Nashville, he was scheduled to be released this morning.
He was even planning on going to Panama City Beach for his annual visit and several months of relaxation.

Roy Skinner was a kind man. A gentle giant.
I had the privilege to meet him and visit with him on several occasions.
Coach Skinner was quiet and very humble. He was very proud of his daughter, Chris, and
his grandkids from Dothan, Al. - Austin Roy, Kayla Jo, and Steven Fox. He was like a father to them.

Roy Skinner is the winningest basketball coach in Vanderbilt history. [278 wins, a 63.3% winning pct.]
In 1966, He had the courage to recruit and sign the first black in SEC Sports, Perry Wallace.
No doubt, a bold statement by Coach Skinner to a segregated South.
His forward thinking and execution of equality and acceptance in the 60's  [regardless of the consequences] makes Coach Roy Skinner a Hall of Fame example, then and now, to all of society.
Especially Vanderbilt and The South.

He won 2 SEC Titles at Vanderbilt, and 4 Times he was named SEC Coach of the year in 16
seasons as Vandy coach. [ 1959, 1961 - 76].
In 2009, Coach Skinner was elected into the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame.
He was revered and loved by his players to this day, at age 80.

There will never be another gentle giant like Coach Roy Skinner. On or off the court.
