Casey Martin stares down Olympic, shoots 74 in U.S. Open - ESPN - By Ian O'Connor | ESPN.com - Casey Martin was hours away from death 10 years ago, and those cold-hearted guardians of the game who challenged his right to use a cart on their golf courses really need to remember that. - The Supreme Court didn't heal Martin's diseased right leg. The landmark case that went the player's way didn't alleviate the mind-numbing pain, didn't wipe out the grim prospect of amputation, and didn't stop a doctor from telling his parents they needed to pray for their child. -"He had 24 hours to live," Martin's mother, Melinda, revealed Thursday as she walked The Olympic Club course to watch the toughest man in the U.S. Open field. - Martin was already world famous for fighting the good fight against the PGA Tour when, in 2002, a series of injections designed to stop his veins from bleeding instead left him with a potentially fatal bacterial infection, left him to endure three emergency surgeries and a two-week stay in a hospital.

Matt Cain hit a drive with Dustin Johnson into McCovey Cove before perfect game (Video) - Yardbarker -Matt Cain warmed up for his perfect game on Wednesday night against the Astros in an unconventional way: by hitting a golf ball into McCovey Cove. PGA Tour golfer Dustin Johnson was visiting AT&T Park ahead of the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco and hit some balls into McCovey Cove before taking in the game. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch, though he didn’t pull it off as well as Rory McIlroy. In addition to Johnson smacking some balls into the water, a few Giants players took swings including Clay Hensley, Aubrey Huff, and former player J.T. Snow. They were looking for more volunteers and Cain stepped forward for a swing. Cain blasted one out of the park and into the water.

Casey Martin returns after years and a lifetime away - Bruce Jenkins - San Francisco Chronicle - Tiger Woods, Martin's teammate and occasional roommate at Stanford, said that "unless you really know him, you don't realize the everyday pain he lives with. I saw it in college, and I don't know how he did it, to be honest with you. I really don't. He doesn't show it, doesn't talk about it, doesn't complain about it, he just lives with it. It would be so easy for him to be bitter, but I think that's what makes him special, so different from everyone else. He has such a strong will." - Watching Martin's pronounced limp over the course of a five-hour round, you began to realize that it's not about the cart, it's about fighting off that pain to stand over a golf ball, find a balanced, powerful swing and hone it to perfection. I wouldn't care if he flew the Concorde between holes. He's back at the U.S. Open, against all odds, and living a dream.

Royals option 1B Clint Robinson to Triple-A, purchase contract of RHP Roman Colon - The Washington Post

Royals promote right-handed reliever Roman Colon from Triple-A Omaha - Reliever rejoins 'pen after stint in Korea; Clint Robinson optioned | MLB.com - Dick Kaegel -- While the Royals could drop a pitcher to add another hitter for the series at St. Louis, it won't be Robinson because he can't be recalled for 10 days. So infielder Irving Falu or outfielder David Lough could be in line if that happens. Robinson was used four times as a pinch-hitter and went hitless with two strikeouts. "It was tough," Yost said. "Every situation I put him in was against closers or seventh- or eighth-inning guys so it was really difficult -- not for just a young guy but for a polished pinch-hitter in general. Having those types of at-bats is very tough but I thought Clint did a good job. It would've been a different story if we didn't have the necessity."
