Woody Paige: Dan O'Dowd era officially ruled an error - The Denver Post - However, some cavemen stupidly suggest The Post has been easy on the Rockies and O'Dowd because the newspaper is a minority partner in the Rox ownership. That misconception is left over from the Rocky Mountain News, which was the team's bed partner. If The Post controlled the Rockies, O'Dowd long ago would have been fired. According to The Post's recent survey question, 89 percent responded that O'Dowd should be fired. The other 11 percent must work for Root (how appropriate) Sports or text those pithy comments shown on the screen during games — "go rockies u kin come back fom 11 dwn bff wher my tacoes." O'Dowd will not be fired no matter what we think because Monfort thinks he is the greatest general manager in baseball. Think again, Dick.

Florida GOP Takes Voter Suppression to a Brazen New Extreme | Ari Berman | Politics News | Rolling Stone - The latest purge comes on the heels of a trio of new voting restrictions passed by Florida Republicans last year, disenfranchising 100,000 previously eligible ex-felons who'd been granted the right to vote under GOP Governor Charlie Crist in 2008; shutting down non-partisan voter registration drives; and cutting back on early voting. The measures, the effect of which will be to depress Democratic turnout in November, are similar to voting curbs passed by Republicans in more than a dozen states, on the bogus pretext of combating "voter fraud" but with the very deliberate goal of shaping the electorate to the GOP's advantage before a single vote has been cast.

Death of snake handling preacher shines light on lethal Appalachian tradition – CNN Belief Blog - CNN.com Blogs/Julia Duin -- Mack Wolford, one of the most famous Pentecostal serpent handlers in Appalachia, was laid to rest Saturday at a low-key service at his West Virginia church a week after succumbing to a snake bite that made headlines across the nation. Several dozen family, friends and members of Wolford's House of the Lord Jesus church in tiny Matoaka filled the simple hall for the service, which lasted slightly more than an hour. At the request of pastor's widow, Fran Wolford, media were forbidden inside the building. Wolford's own dad was a serpent handler who died from a snake bite in 1983.
