Meggie Zahneis: Chipper Jones reflects on career, offers advice to kids | MLB.com - Chipper Jones says his baseball idols growing up were Cal Ripken Jr. and Mickey Mantle. "I came up as a shortstop, so I wanted to emulate who I thought was the best shortstop in the game. And Cal Ripken was it. My dad always brought me up switch-hitting in the shadow of Mickey Mantle, so those are the two guys that I looked up to," Jones said. But now, Jones is the one baseball stars of tomorrow -- and today -- look up to.

The Party Animals at the Secret Circus - NYTimes.com - Maureen Dowd - THE Secret Circus, as the traveling Secret Service extravaganza is known, had come to town. And the pack of macho Secret Service agents were hitting the clubs, drinking and hanging out with comely young women in alluring outfits. That was half a century ago in Fort Worth at the Press Club and a joint called the Cellar, where the waitresses wore only underwear. The carousing started after midnight on Nov. 22, 1963, the day the agents were charged with keeping President Kennedy and Jackie safe in Dallas. Boys will be boys. And no one doubts that being an agent is a tough job.

Football playoff adds ‘greater swirl' to SEC meetings  | ajc.com - Tim Tucker -“I’m not sure we’ve had a Destin meeting in a long time with as much of a substantive agenda as I expect [this time],” Adams said last week. “… The normal swirl is a little greater swirl this year because of the issues surrounding football.” The meetings, which begin Tuesday and run through Friday, will draw presidents, athletic directors, coaches and other administrators from the SEC schools. The dominant topic will be college football’s apparent movement toward a four-team playoff that would crown the national champion beginning in the 2014 season.
