He's about to turn 40, but Chipper Jones is still a mighty man | Mark Bradley - AJC - It is not my intent to write about Chipper Jones every day of calendar 2012, but let’s face it: The guy IS amazing. Hurts his knee in spring training before he can announce his impending retirement, has arthroscopic surgery, recuperates blurry-fast and is ready to go in the season’s fifth game, hits a home run in his first game back.

Number of African-American baseball players dips again – USATODAY.com - Bob Nightengale - Major League Baseball, celebrating Jackie Robinson Day on Sunday, has the lowest percentage of African-American players since the earliest days of the sport's integration, according to research conducted by USA TODAY Sports. The African-American population in baseball this season has plummeted to 8.05%, less than half the 17.25% in 1959 when the Boston Red Sox became the last team to integrate their roster, 12 years after Robinson broke baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It's a dramatic decline from 1975, when 27% of rosters were African-American. In 1995, the percentage was 19%.

Web freedom faces greatest threat ever, warns Google's Sergey Brin | Technology | The Guardian -- The principles of openness and universal access that underpinned the creation of the internet three decades ago are under greater threat than ever, according to Google co-founder Sergey Brin. In an interview with the Guardian, Brin warned there were "very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world". "I am more worried than I have been in the past," he said. "It's scary." The threat to the freedom of the internet comes, he claims, from a combination of governments increasingly trying to control access and communication by their citizens, the entertainment industry's attempts to crack down on piracy, and the rise of "restrictive" walled gardens such as Facebook and Apple, which tightly control what software can be released on their platforms.

The Economics of Scandal: A $55,735 Hiring Cost Arkansas Football Coach Bobby Petrino $18 million - Forbes - Allen St. John - Petrino’s hiring of Dorrell wasn’t just sleazy, it was almost certainly illegal–remember that University of Arkansas is a state university and Dorrell was getting paid with state funds–and in direct violation of any number of university personnel and conflict of interest policies.
