Arkansas AD reminds us that college bigwigs can still do the right thing - Sporting News - Matt Hayes -Every once in a while it happens. In the midst of all that is wrong, something so right finds its way through. Arkansas should be utterly embarrassed today at the very thought of Bobby Petrino. And absolutely giddy about Jeff Long. At one point during Long’s press conference to announce that he, as athletic director at Arkansas, had fired Petrino, I stood up and clapped. In my living room, with my dog staring at me like I’d gone half crazy. This is what college sports needs, where the madness finally turns and we all get off this ridiculous carousel of pandering and enabling and selling out for winning. Where—I know this will sound foreign to some of you—there are actually consequences for choices.
UPDATED: Arkansas had no choice but to fire Petrino | Jeff Schultz - AJC - Petrino apparently gave Jessica Dorrell $20,000. Athletic director Jeff Long couldn’t say for certain what that payment was for, but it’s safe to assume that Arkansas generally doesn’t give the “student-athlete development coordinator” a $20,000 signing bonus.
Urban decay? The Sporting News examines a 'broken' Florida | Mark Bradley - AJC - The Georgia Bulldogs haven’t had the sunniest of offseasons — and there’s still a whole summer to go! — but Matt Hayes of Sporting News offers a bit of reading guaranteed to warm the Red & Black heart. It’s about Urban Meyer and Florida, and if you happen to hate the Gators this will serve as the feel-good story of the spring. It commences with a killer anecdotal lead (or lede, as we say in the trade): The Urban Crier, who’s now coaching Ohio State, tells the family of recruit Stephon Diggs he wouldn’t let his son go to Florida because of “character issues in the locker room.”
Arkansas Razorbacks fire Bobby Petrino as coach - (VIDEO) ESPN - Arkansas fired coach Bobby Petrino on Tuesday, publicly dressing him down for unfairly hiring his mistress and intentionally misleading his boss about everything from their relationship to her presence at the motorcycle accident that ultimately cost him his job. Athletic director Jeff Long announced his decision at an evening news conference and laid out a stunning laundry list of misdeeds against the man he hired away from the Atlanta Falcons four years ago.
