Tebow Professes His Evangelical Faith Carefully - NYTimes.com - John Branch and Mary Pilon - As he demonstrates in interviews and throughout his book, in his frequent appearances at churches and prisons, and even at his hugely anticipated and nationally televised introductory news conference for the Jets on Monday, Tebow is far from a firebrand evangelical. With unflappable optimism and politeness, using his gift for artfully preaching without sounding preachy, Tebow mostly discusses his life story — a child of Southern Baptist missionaries in the Philippines who prayed for a son to become a preacher, named for Timothy in the Bible. Football, Tebow says, is his platform for greater good. He talks about the charitable works of his family and his own foundation. And he repeatedly invokes Jesus Christ’s name and the good that comes from committing to a life lived by his creed. He has more followers than most preachers, and evokes more passion than most politicians. But, unlike so many of them, Tebow shows little interest in using his pulpit to take controversial stances.

Jim Nantz, Inspired by Father, Takes Role in Alzheimer’s Research - NYTimes.com - Richard Sandomir - 1/20/2011 - Jim Nantz had a master plan: his father would retire from his furniture business and join him on the road at N.F.L. games, golf tournaments and college basketball arenas. The elder Nantz, who was also named Jim, would help manage and organize his son’s busy life on the road. “He’d tell me, ‘Oh, son, you really don’t need me,’ ” Nantz said. But really, he wanted his gregarious father — his first and best confidant and a former college football player — with him as much as possible and to enjoy the Masters, the Super Bowl and the N.C.A.A. Final Four together. They were maybe a year from that goal. -- The elder Nantz died in 2008, soon after the release of his son’s book “Always by My Side: The Healing Gift of a Father’s Love” (Gotham), which told the parallel stories of his sportscasting career and life with a parent with Alzheimer’s.

NFL.com - Broncos reportedly shopped Tebow at NFL combine - Long before the Broncos had a bead on Peyton Manning, they were already thinking about shipping Tebow out of Denver. As early as February's NFL Scouting Combine, the team began "quietly shopping" the quarterback, The Florida Times-Union reported this week. John Elway's words at the combine are worth revisiting. The Broncos' executive vice president of football operations offered high praise for Tebow one month ago.

Backup to Starter to Phenomenon. Repeat. - Mania for Tim Tebow Rooted in Big Moments - NYTimes.com - Sam Borden -Here, about 1,000 miles south of the Jets’ practice facility in Florham Park, N.J., those who have followed Tebow the longest watch with amusement. They have grown accustomed to the routine and the reaction, and while there has been considerable debate in Tebow’s hometown over how the Jacksonville Jaguars ran second to the Jets in the sweepstakes for their local star, any consternation over that near-miss has not diminished the city’s abiding love for its favorite son. “This is where it began,” his high school coach, Craig Howard, said this week. Before Tebow won a Heisman Trophy at Florida or captivated the N.F.L. with the Broncos, he was a star on a tiny stage at Nease High School, introducing to a small audience what has become an oddly predictable and wildly popular routine.

Zakaria: Incarceration nation – Global Public Square - CNN.com Blogs - "I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol," Mr. Robertson said in a recent interview. "I've never used marijuana and I don't intend to, but it's just one of those things that I think. This war on drugs just hasn't succeeded." The reason Robertson is for legalizing marijuana is that it has created a prison problem in America that is well beyond what most Americans imagine. "It's completely out of control," Mr. Robertson said. "Prisons are being overcrowded with juvenile offenders having to do with drugs. And the penalties - the maximums - some of them could get 10 years for possession of a joint of marijuana. It makes no sense at all." -- No other country comes even close to our rates of incarceration. We have 760 prisoners per 100,000 people. Most European countries have one seventh that number - Zakaria
