THE MECK REPORT - I'll Always Remember Brad Delp: The Mother Teresa of Rock n Roll. 03/12/07

posted Mar 12, 2007 - 3:02p
THE MECK REPORT
I'll Always Remember Brad Delp: The Mother Teresa of Rock n Roll.

A friend [Gene Dews] called Friday nite [ Mar. 9th] and gave me the news: 'Brad Delp is dead.'
I could hardly speak. This was the first time Brad Delp had ever made me sad.
It's also the first time the music ever stopped.

Tears filled my eyes as the wonderful memories flooded my soul.
I immediately called Marty Hom [ in Indianapolis] and Glenn Matthews [in The Czech Republic].
I'm grateful to longtime friends, Marty and Glenn, for always including me [and my friends].

Thanks to Marty Hom .. I was able to go see Boston in concert [ in the early 90's].
Marty gave me a backstage pass and I met the man with the incredible voice - Brad Delp.
He was so kind and accessible. No ego. He made you feel like a rock star.
--
JAVY MEETS BRAD IN ATLANTA
In the summer of 1995 .. Boston was playing Chastain Park in Atlanta.
Marty said .. 'Meck .. Invite any of the Braves players to come hear the concert.'
I asked Javy Lopez if he liked the group Boston ..?
He said .. 'Boston is my favorite group of all-time.
I can find no tickets to the concert.'

I said .. 'My friend Marty will take care of you.'
Ryan Klesko joined Javy and I at the concert that Sunday nite.
We hung out backstage with Brad and Marty and visited with the band.
Javy really enjoyed talking with Brad Delp.
He invited the band to the game the next day.

Brad, Tom Scholz, Gary Pihl, Dave Sikes, Marty Hom, and Glenn Matthews
rode with me and we got to the yard early for batting practice.

Jim Schultz and Glen Serra took great care of us.
It was a wonderful day. I know Brad was a big baseball fan.
And a Javy Lopez fan. It was really cool sitting with Brad and the band.
They were always friendly.

He joined me several other times [ thru the years] for a Braves game.
Brad loved hanging out at the yard and visiting.
I'll never forget [ as we watched one game] his song 'Long Time' played between innings.
--
BRAD AND JAVY COME TO DOTHAN
I had a radio show in Southeast Al. I invited Javy to come to Dothan.
I then called Brad and asked him if he'd join us.
He said he'd be glad to. I couldn't believe it. I was thrilled.

Brad flew into Dothan International [ Gate 1] on Sat. Jan 13, 1996.
On Sunday morning he joined me at Bro. Jerry Spencer's church - Ridgecrest.
As we walked in Brad said .. 'Meck .. You've got drums and guitars at your church.'
Brother Jerry and I presented Brad with a Bible [ his name engraved on it].
He was deeply touched.

I shared with the audience .. 'Some of you are thinking .. Don't he sing that there Rock n Roll ?'
'Yes he does .. So well that he has the Number 1 debut album in music history.'
'He came all the way from Boston [ at no charge] to tell your kids .. It's Cool To Be Straight.'
'What are you doing .. ?'

Brad was warmly received [ to put it mildly].

Mon afternoon we had a reception at Sam and Maria Cherry's house. Brad loved their piano.
Mon nite [ Jan 15, 96] Brad Delp and Javy Lopez drew over 5 thousand people
at the Holiday Inn South [ Dothan].
They were wrapped around the motel and down 231 South [ in the misting rain].

They signed autographs as we did the radio show together.
Several Brad Delp fans drove from New Orleans to meet him [ 6 hrs one way].
Javy gave Brad an autographed jersey. Brad gave Javy an autographed guitar.
They both rocked my hometown. Wonderful memories.

Chief John White estimated the record crowd at 5 thousand plus.
Noting that Javy and Brad even outdrew Pres. Reagan's 1986 visit to Dothan.

Later that nite Brad and I hung out with my friend July Lopez at Applebees ..
visiting with my friend Tammy Carter. They couldn't believe how humble and kind Brad was.

Brad stayed 3 nites in my hometown of Dothan, Al.
He gave us his greatest gift .. TIME.
His compassion and kindness is still remembered today.
My hometown will never be the same because Brad Delp reached out.
--
BACKSTAGE MEMORIES
I'll never forget taking my radio listeners/friends with me [on a bus] to see Boston in concert in Pensacola.
Marty Hom helped make it possible and took great care us.
Of course Brad had time to meet my friends and sign autographs.

Brad was always grateful that people gave their time and money to come hear Boston.
He never took the fans and his success for granted.
I truly believe he enjoyed visiting with people more than the music.

I'll never forget backstage at Oak Mtn. in Birmingham, Al. when Brad asked me ..
'Meck .. Would you like a vegetarian sandwich?'
I joined Brad for a vegetarian hamburger. It was really good.

That was always Brad Delp. Including others in his life.
He was all about serving others. That's where the power is.
Everlasting fame and fortune.

I'll never forget the last 2 times I saw him in Atlanta [ 2003]
and the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.[ 2004].

I remember sound check in Atlanta standing on stage while he warmed up.
Visiting back stage. Standing side stage with Glenn Matthews during the concert.
As always Brad stayed late .. signing for everyone and pictures too.

The Beau Rivage. Very small auditorium.
It was like a concert in your living room. He was fabulous as always.
I visited with him at dinner after the concert.
Brad was a blessing. He always encouraged me.

I remember walking with Brad and several others out to the bus.[ late that nite]
He signed autographs. Never saw him turn anyone down.
I remember he gave me a hug.
--
THE MOTHER TERESA OF ROCK
I appreciate the times he came on my radio show.
He even cut promos for me as we drove to the airport in Dothan.
He was so willing to help you in any way he could.

Brad reached out to me and brought so much joy to me and many of my friends.
That's what caused me to admire Brad so much.
He always had TIME for me and my friends.

What will they say about you when you die ??
Will they say anything at all ..?
Have you ever thought about it ??

They still talk about my mother, Eunice, and her kindness to others [ 17 years after her passing].
No Doubt the lives Brad touched will even outlive his music.
His incredible voice was trumped only by the TIME and kindness he gave to others.

Brad Delp was The Mother Teresa of Rock n Roll.
He had the gift of Greatness - 'The ability to make those around him feel great.'
Brad was simply a servant to everyone he met.
That's his everlasting legacy .. Fame and Fortune.

Hanging out with Brad Delp and watching him taught me an important lesson.
I need to accept people - Just As They Are.
Not how I want them to be. [ as I so often did]

Also .. I'm learning that this life is not all about me.
It's all about Others. Compassion.
No Doubt .. Brad Delp learned that Tune long ago.
And Sang it every day with his life.

That's the No. 1 hit I'll remember most by Brad Delp.
--
WHAT WILL THEY SAY?
I can only imagine .. Fri Afternoon about 1:20p [ Mar. 9, 2007]
when Jesus welcomed Brad home and gave him a Back Stage Pass 4 Eternity.
Surely Jesus must have said [ what we've been thinking since 1976]
'Brad .. Well Done. Where'd you get that incredible voice ..?'
I'm sure he replied [ humbly as always] 'Thank You Father.'

I'm Feelin' Satisfied that one day I'll see Brad again.
And I thought it'd be this summer on the Boston - REO Speedwagon Tour.

Brad Delp. His life was definitely More than a Feeling.
He had Passion and Compassion - ' 2 essentials that meet in the middle to reach a goal.'
Passion - What you Do in Life. Compassion - Others. Others. Others.

Think about it .. What will they say about you when you die ??
Will they say anything at all ..?

No Doubt .. We will be singing Brad Delp's tunes for a Long Time.
His Uplifting Songs. Undeniable Vocals. The TIME and Compassion he had for Others.

Brad Delp .. the lead singer of Boston .. has the Number 1 debut album in music history.
[Boston by Boston - 17 million copies].
Brad's life touched and inspired so many of us .. Leaving Countless trophies that will last forever.

Here's what Brad wrote on my 'Third Stage' CD.
To Meck - Hope This Keeps You company on some of Those Long Road Trips!
Thanks for having me to your town, your church & your home.
Best of Luck in all you do!
Brad Delp - Boston '96'

My life will never be the same because I knew Brad Delp.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you.
It's time to turn the music back on. Turn it up.

I'm grateful Paul made this news/human interest story a priority on his sports program.
One listener from Mobile wrote a check for 1 thousand dollars.

Meck visits with his friend and producer.. Super Dave/ David Strickland re Enterprise.
Their thoughts on the devastation near their hometowns.

It's the saddest sight I've ever seen. It looks like Katrina without the water.
It broke my heart to witness the pain and destruction.
--
Meck talks about the 17 yr. old senior, Michael Tompkins, who died in the tornado Thursday.
Reports are .. He was in the 3rd hall [ leaning against the wall ]
talking to his mother when his cell ph went silent [at 1:13p].
His Dad was flying a helicopter in Iraq on Thurs. and has returned home to Enterprise to bury his son.
--

Enterprise .." The City Of Progress "
Many of the students and familes in this wonderful city are part of Fort Rucker.
The Army trains all helicopter pilots in the military at Fort Rucker.
Aprox 1300 - 1500 students attend EHS - the only High School in this city of 22 thousand.
This is one of the finest schools in Alabama. Academics .. Sports .. Spirit.
A proud family environment. Students are well disciplined.

My longtime, precious friend, Miss Saliba, shared her memories with me of teaching
Spanish at Enterprise High School. She loved EHS .. like so many in the Wiregrass.
--
An interview [ at ground zero in Enterprise] with friend and
Mr. News in Alabama .. Bob Howell - WSFA 12 .. Montgomery Al.

Bob describes the horrible scene and what happened in Hall 3 when the wall and roof
caved in and 8 Enterprise High School students lost their lives when the tornado hit
between 1:10 - 1:15p on Thurs Mar 1, 2007.

Meck notes .. Re the Tornado
- The school was planning to dismiss early at 1:00p
- Aprox 180 mph winds [ tornado moving at 55 mph]
- Aprox an 8 mile path [ about 200 yds wide]
- School buses .. Hundreds of cars heavily damaged [ windows blown out]
- The school destroyed in about 30 seconds or less.
- Eight students die.
- Aprox 40 to 50 students taken to area hospitals.

as of Mar 5th
-- Aprox 350 million dollars damage in the city of Enterprise Al.
-- 569 homes damaged
-- 236 totally destroyed
-- 121 w/ major damage
-- 140 w/ minor damage
-- 99 affected somewhat

Miss Edna Strickland also died from the tornado. She was 83.
Total of Nine deaths in Enterprise.
--
-- 8 fatalities is the record for an Alabama school. [ Cowarts in 1918 and now Enterprise]
It happened 89 years ago when a tornado slammed into a school in Cowarts Al.

Tornado - 1918 in Cowarts, Al [ 5 miles east of Dothan, Al]
Tornado - 2007 in Enterprise Al [ 25 miles west of Dothan ]

The similarities in these tornadoes [ 89 years apart] are stunning.

1918 - 7students and 1 teacher [ 8 deaths]
2007 - 8 students die

1918 - Tornado struck at 1:40p
2007 - Tornado struck at 1:10p

1918 - 10 deaths in the area [ Cowarts - Webb]
2007 - 9 deaths in Enterprise

1918 - 120 injuries
2007 - 121 injuries [ reported as of Mar 4]

1918 - F3 tornado
2007 - F3 tornado [ possibly an F4]
--

Enterprise High School was ripped apart and so was Bates Memorial Stadium.
[ It sits in a valley adjacent to the school]
One of the finest stadiums in Alabama .. It was 50 years old.
So many memories .. The winning tradion of EHS Football and Coach Bacon - 27 years.

Hillcrest Baptist Church [ the other side of the stadium] was barely touched with minor damage.
These fine people have been a refuge for many at the school and will continue to be I'm sure.

I enjoyed stopping by First Baptist .. They are a Red Cross Shelter.
Many wonderful volunteers. I met one lady who came all the way from Illinois.
I wanted to say hello to Mary w/ the Red Cross office in Enterprise. She was out working.

I appreciate the kindness of the people at St. Luke Methodist Church.
A wonderful supper on Sat nite.

It was great hanging out with my friend Bob Howell and the Ch 12 news team in Enterprise.
Excellent coverage as always.
Many came by to express their thanks to Bob Howell for their coverage.
--

I'll always remember the President/Air Force One landing in Dothan at 8:01 am on Sat.
and visiting Enterprise .. helping get the federal relief agencies in gear.[ Declaring Enterprise a Federal Disaster]
It's not often a President of The United States comes to Southeast Ala.
[The last time was 1986 when Pres Reagan visited Dothan, Al.]

I know Pres. Bush lifted the spirits in this stricken area.
I'll never forget that scene when he had his hands on the shoulders of the SGA Pres.[ Megan Parks]
comforting her and classmate [Sarah Carroll ] .. Surrounded by their shredded school.

A moving and tearful scene.

They asked Megan .. 'When did she find out she was going to meet the President ?'
'I got a call about 30 mins before he arrived. '
'I was at work' .. she said.

Can you even imagine that segway of emotions ?

You're at work .. grief stricken and you get a call:
'The President of the United States would like to meet you.'

There's nothing that can compare to hope.
Reaching out .. no matter who we are.
--

Thanks for listening to our show regarding the tragedy and recovery in Enterprise.
Thanks to Bob Howell and Super Dave for their perspectives.
Thanks for your TIME and reaching out to help.
Meck

Throw me the ball Daddy
I've been waiting all day
I'm so glad you're home and we got some time
So Let's go out and play
Just me and you
It's my favorite thing to do
Daddy I'm tellin' the truth

Chorus
T I M E time
Spells L O V E love
And Love is the one thing
This world needs more of
The choice is up to you
So what will you do
With your T I M E Time
and your L O V E love

I'll never forget you Daddy
You taught me the game so well
It's taken me places I never dreamed
So many stories to tell
How the time has come and gone
And now I have a son of my own
And I'm making sure your memory lives on

Bridge
I've heard it said a time or two
This game of life can take from you
But I found out love isn't really love
Till you give it away

Walter Banks Brings Message Of Service - The Dothan Progress

Walter Banks Brings Message Of Service - The Dothan Progress
Jan. 25, 2007

By Robby Smith
Progress Sports Editor
For the past 40 years, Walter Banks has been serving others within the Atlanta Braves organization in a unique way to baseball fans of all ages.

From the opening pitch in April to the final out in October, Banks has become an institution for Braves’ baseball fans.
Banks was a special guest during the morning worship service Sunday at First Baptist Church of Dothan on West Main Street.

Since 1966, Banks has been with the Atlanta Braves, serving as the executive usher for the Owner’s Box in Aisle 107 at Turner Field.

Banks serves presidents, business leaders, players and everyday fans.
He has also worked in the mail room of Rich’s (now Macy’s) for the last 48 years.
Banks also serves as the greeter for the Georgia Dome Press Box during Atlanta Falcons’ home football games and works the gate at Georgia Tech football, men’s and women’s basketball games.

In 2002, he was elected to Georgia Hospitality Hall of Fame.
The Braves Owner’s Suite (by the dugout) was renamed the Walter Banks Suite last year.
He is often called “the walking encyclopedia.” Banks can relate any number to baseball or life.
Banks said he always likes to travel and visit different types of people.
“I always enjoy going to new cities,” Banks said. “I try to arrange my vacations around sporting events.
“On Father’s Day, I’m going to Cleveland to see the Braves play the Cleveland Indians.
“I always like to know about the people in that community. The size isn’t important. It is the people that’s important. When you meet people as warm as The Meck (David Meckley), (FBC) Pastor (Dr. John) Fain, or someone else from Dothan, I can relate to the community and the hearts of the people.

“Most of the people I’ve seen so far have extended themselves.
“The Meck is a special person. He’s the same all of the time. The Meck is like an angel from heaven.
“Dothan is a place I wouldn’t mind coming back to. The first time I go to a new city, I like to see the community. The second time, I like to see the friends I’ve met.”

Among some of Banks’ favorite Atlanta players include former players Dusty Baker and Phil Niekro, along with current young stars Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann.

Banks said working for the Braves has been like a dream that never stops for him.
“It’s a dream,” Banks said. “The dream has been such a nice ride. I hope the dream doesn’t stop.
“I just wish everyone could enjoy the Braves experience.”
During his career, Banks has witnessed major events, such as the first Major League Baseball game played in the Deep South, Hank Aaron’s 715th home run, Pete Rose’s 44-game hitting streak ending, the Braves winning 14 straight division titles, Atlanta’s first World Series title in 1995 and countless other unbelievable moments at Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field.

Banks said it is still important to be a beacon of light for the Atlanta sports community.
“As long as the teams are winning, everyone has a good time,” Banks said. “But I feel like I’m an ambassador for the city of Atlanta. I’d like to be able to exchange the enjoyments of other fans and their teams.”

Despite being a huge sports fan, Banks said his duties at Georgia Tech don’t allow him to see all of the action on the field or the court.

“Being a ticket taker (at Georgia Tech), I usually don’t see the game until halftime,” Banks said. “But it is usually the last quarter when it is the most exciting.

“It’s very rewarding. There’s a richness you receive, no matter how cold or hot it is. You learn how to take care of yourself.

“You see the same people and the same faces.
“You want them to have the Braves’ experience like you’ve been taught or shared. When you enjoy yourself, the time goes by so fast.

“Every game is a trophy game. You can’t take it for granted.
“You have to appreciate what you have today, because it can be gone tomorrow.”
Banks said he has also become close friends with former president Jimmy Carter.
“President Carter is a visitor to Turner Field three times a year,” Banks said.
“Over the years, you get to know him. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the commercial about Georgia tourism and hospitality in Plains, Ga.

“I’ve also hosted people like Colin Powell, Frank Robinson, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, actor Jamie Foxx and Al Downing.

“For 40 years, it’s been off the charts with the people I’ve talked to.
“When you meet somebody, it’s like church, because you never forget the friendships.”

Happy 47th Birthday [ Sunday, 28th] to Vicki Martin. You wear it well.
--
SD Interviews The Meck ..
We talk about our friend and brother in radio, Dave Gilligan, who is recovering quite well.
He's home resting and doing his air shift again on 95.5 - WTVY.
Wish him the Best. Because He's The Best. Dave turns 43 on Mon. the 29th.

Walter Banks. People from all over Dothan and the Wiregrass
filled the church to hear Walter.
Susan Brazell Smith, Mike and Sandy Schmitz, Sam Cherry, Starla Matthews,
Mayor Thomas, Comiss. Matthews and Comiss. Newsome. Tom and Jane Ziegenfelder.
And many more guests. [including Pastor Fain's motorcycle club]

Tom Ziegenfelder, [a man with a servant's heart] shared re Walter's message Sunday at First Baptist.
'It's amazing how a common man like Walter can be an inspiration to so many.
You don't have to have billions like Bill Gates. Walter serves people.
We can all learn a lot from Walter about Christianity and serving our fellow man.' -TZ

Young and old crowded around Walter before and after the service to have their picture with him.
It was amazing. Like a rock star. I've never seen such a diversified crowd attracted to the same person.
Young and Old. Rich and Poor. All drawn to Walter Banks by his compassion and love.
A simple man who serves others and treats everyone the same.
Walter has the gift of Greatness. 'The ability to make those around you feel great.'

Thousands watched by TV as Walter shared and blessed everyone with his compassion and wisdom.
It was a joy to interview him and share the same stage w/ he and Johnny Fain.
We gave a Chipper Jones jersey to Russell Craig. [ 12 years old] He's a kind, young boy who can't see.
But his dedication and smile is seen by everyone. He was thrilled. He's a big Braves fan.

I'll never forget Tallulah Snell winning the Brian McCann autographed baseball from Walter.
She knew a baseball has 1 seam. She was thrilled to win and meet Walter.

The message, just like Walter, was simple. Serve Others with Compassion.
The message of the cross is simple, too. That's why so many miss it. It's a gift.

Walter reminds me of my mother. He doesn't sit around studying the Bible.
He's out doing the Bible. We need more doers. No Doubt.
You can know all about Jesus/God and not know him.
If you know him personally ..You'll reach out with his compassion.
--
Enjoyed our visit to Mike Schmitz Automotive Group, Monday morning.
Mike and Walter have a kindred spirit. Serving and Giving to Others.
Mike invited Walter to speak to his Sales People.
We left Mike's office and walked over to the meeting.

Walter shared .. ' In 2003 Mike ran in the Iron Man Race.'
'His time was [ Walter quoted the exact numbers he had read on Mike's plaque in the office] '
and then said .. ' How bout a big hand for Mike . ? '

They clapped and everyone was impressed that Walter remembered those numbers
from Mike's office. Walter reminded everyone.' Be sure and Pay attention.'
They really enjoyed Walter and he enjoyed spending time with them.

We really enjoyed our visit to the George Washington Carver Museum [ Old Bus Station].
Thanks to Sarah Woodham for calling Miss Francina Williams who opened the museum on her day off.
Walter, Pastor Fain and myself were amazed at the history and treasures in this local museum.
Everyone should go by and visit. You will learn a lot.
You'll really enjoy meeting Miss Francina. She has great passion for her work. Wonderful lady.
--
I really enjoyed my visit yesterday to the Swedish Match Cigar Plant [ in Dothan].
250 employees. Very Dedicated. Very Friendly. 1 million, 1 hundred thousand cigars a day.
Thanks for the educational tour by Tony Martin [ the Factory Mgr] and Larry Pressnell
[the Manufacturing Mgr]. I appreciate your T I M E and taking great care of The Meck.

Super Bowl .. Picking the Colts. No mystery.
Jim Nantz, great announcer and kind gentleman, announcing for CBS.

Ed Mangan grows the grass for Turner Field and the Super Bowl.
Grows his Super Bowl Grass in Palm Springs Calif. Digs it up Jan 1.
Trucks it to the Super Bowl site and plants the SB field.
Both teams practice fields are re-planted to mirror the Super Bowl field.

Glad we stopped by and visited with Paul Finebaum last Friday.
His last show in his Clear Channel Studio. It was memorable 4 sure.

Really enjoyed the Rod Stewart Concert in Bham last Friday nite.
Great seats. [Those Maddox Girls were throwing down.]
I told Laura and Vicki this was one of the greatest bands I'd ever heard.
Told my friend Glenn they sounded like the Stones.
He informed me .. Rod's lead guitarist is Ron Wood of the Rollling Stones.

No wonder I liked it so much.
I almost rushed the stage on Hot Legs.
Rod was 2 Cool 4 School. Now and even in '74 when I graduated from Dothan High.

Thanks for your T I M E Today.

T I M E spells L O V E

Throw me the ball Daddy
I've been waiting all day
I'm so glad you're home and we got some time
So Let's go out and play
Just me and you
It's my favorite thing to do
Daddy I'm tellin' the truth

Chorus
T I M E time
Spells L O V E love
And Love is the one thing
This world needs more of
The choice is up to you
So what will you do
With your T I M E Time
and your L O V E love

I'll never forget you Daddy
You taught me the game so well
It's taken me places I never dreamed
So many stories to tell
How the time has come and gone
And now I have a son of my own
And I'm making sure your memory lives on

Bridge
I've heard it said a time or two
This game of life can take from you
But I found out love isn't really love
Till you give it away

The Meck Radio Show - Tony Gwynn Interview. 01/10/07
www.TheMeck.com Posted 2:09a ct. Show Time: 27 Mins.

Meck Notes:
A visit with Tony Gwynn - Summer of 1993 in St. Louis.
This interview defines his success. [Then and Now ] A must listen.
Tony gives much of the credit to his wife, Alicia.

Javy Lopez signs today with the Colorado Rockies.[ to be their catcher]
Good move by Javy to get back in the Nat'l League. Plus hit at Coors Field.
Tough on catchers - Longer games. More runs scored.

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn gets 97.6% of the votes on his first ballot for Baseball's Hall of Fame.
A lifetime .338 avg -- 18 consec. seasons hitting over .300 -- 15-time All-Star.
Only 434 Strike-Outs in 20 years. Amazing. 8-Time Batting Champion.-- Over 3, 000 Hits.

I will always remember the days hanging with Tim Teufel, Craig Lefferts and Kevin Ward w/ the Padres.
Wonderful memories. I got to shag for Tony Gwynn at Shea Stadium [ All you do is stand still in Left Field.]
Plus Busch Stadium. Never forget the day he rode to the yard with me in Atlanta.
Tony liked to take early hitting at 2:30p.
If the greatest hitter in baseball needed to practice. Everbody needs to practice.
--
Tony Gwynn has the gift of Greatness - 'The ability to make those around him feel great.'
He always has time for people. Including an interview.

1993 Interv - St. Louis [ Meck Rewind]
Tony talks about his friend and teammate Kevin Ward.

'My day-to-day routine hasn't changed in 12 years.'
'Just because I wear this ML uniform doesn't mean I'm better than anybody else.'
'What I do isn't flamboyant. It's a day-to-day grind. 162 games schedule. I have fun doing what I do.' - TG
--
I met Tony's wife, Alicia, sitting by Val Teufel. She really blessed me.
He talks about his love for his family.

'There's nothing in the world more important to me than my family.' - TG

'She [ Alicia] has been a big influence in my life and baseball.' - TG

'There were times I thought about giving it up and doing something else.
She had faith. Believed that If I worked hard, I'd be successful. If I applied myself.' - TG

'Without her words of encouragement, I don't think I would have gotten to this point.' -TG

'You can ask anybody in the organization if I would have been as successful as I have without her.' -TG

'She's my hitting coach. She's my wife and she's the mother of my children and
very important part of my life.' - Tony Gwynn

'One thing she preaches. Those days you go 0 - 4 ..
Be Thankful you have the opportunity to go 0 - 4.'
'Just getting the opportunity is the important thing. ' - Tony Gwynn
--

No Doubt. Tony Gwynn was already in the Real Hall of Fame back in 1993.
Where The Score Lasts Forever. Everlasting Fame and Fortune.
His priorites, in the correct order, have defined his success.
Please listen and share this inspiring interview with a friend.

Thanks to Tim Teufel, Craig Lefferts, and Kevin Ward for always including the Meck
and giving me their T I M E. I will always be grateful for your friendship.

The Meck Radio Show w/ Bob Nightengale - USA TODAY Baseball Writer. 01/09/07
www.TheMeck.com Posted 3:22a ct. Show Time: 32 Mins.

Meck Notes:
A visit with my friend Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY re his MLB Hall Of Fame Ballot.
The inductees will be named today.

I first met Bob in the early 90's. He was writing for the LA Times.[covering the San Diego Padres]
His thoughts on Tony Gwynn:
'A Wonderful Guy. The Dale Murphy of The West'. 'A Fabulous hitter. '
'Down to earth. He would treat a Jr. High reporter the same as one from CBS.'- Bob Nightengale
--
Your MLB Hall of Fame Ballot ?
'Gwynn, Ripken [In for sure].'
'Goose Gossage [closer than people think].'
'Jim Rice.'
'Jack Morris - Possibly the Greatest Postseason pitching performance of all-time.'
'10 shutout innings over the Braves in '91 World Series.'
'Bert Blyleven.' - BN
--
We talk about Cal Ripken's streak [ 1982 - 1995] 2131 consec games played.
Bob tells a funny story.. Cal says 2 years before the streak ended ..
His wife is about to give birth to their son.
The media is saying, Cal can't miss a game to break the streak.
He explains it to his wife: You wouldn't want our son to carry that label with him,
for breaking the streak .. Would you ? She bought it, Cal said. - BN

'I can see a group buying the Orioles one day and making Cal the President.' - BN
--

'Gwynn was an All-Wac Point Guard at San Diego State, drafted by the San Diego Clippers.' - BN

On Mark McGuire:' Even if this guy was clean - He wasn't a slam dunk for the H of Fame[first ballot].'
One dimmensional. A lot of bad years. He wasn't consistent. - BN

'Bonds was a Hall of Famer before the suspicions.' - BN
'I don't think it's a slam dunk he'll break Henry's record.[ this year]' - Bob Nightengale

--
Why is it that the Braves don't seem to have any money? [ when most other teams do]
' [With their payroll staying at 80 million] They've got a ton of money.'
'With the TV and everything else, they're making a killing.' - BN

Re the Braves sale - Time Warner/Liberty Media negotiations reportedly deadlocked.
Bob discusses his thoughts on whether the deal will go thru.

'I'd certainly rather have the Braves than the Cubs.' 'The Braves are a great franchise.' - BN

[ If the current negotiations with Liberty fall through]
Do you think Donald Watkins could enter the picture as a candidate to buy the Braves?
'He could. With the price of ethanol going up. [and his assets]' - BN

Do you think Donald will own a team and be the first black owner ?
'As long as he doesn't get discouraged [with the process]. Donald's been a success.'
'He would be great for the game, with his personality and itelligence.' - BN

'It would be a cinderella story. Grew up in the same church with Dr. King.' [as his pastor]
'I'd probably move down to Atlanta myself and work out of there.'
'I know I could get some good hot dogs in his booth/box.' - Bob Nightengale.
--
Your guess at the vote totals [ today] for the H of Fame - Gwynn and Ripken.
'Ripken, at least 98%. More than Tom Seaver.'
'Gwynn, at 99%. Within 2 or 3 votes of being unanimous.' - BN

Has anyone ever been unanimous ?
'Never' [ in Baseball History]. BN
-

Update on Jimbo Saga.
What made Jimbo Fisher stop waflling on Bobby Bowden and honor his commitment ?
Saturday nite, FSU withdrew their offer to Jimbo [ tired of being played like a piano.]

Sunday morning .. Jimbo and/or his agent Jimmy Sexton called Bobby Bowden.
They wanted to talk and Bobby must have listened and Monday a deal was done. Finally.
A Burning Bridge was doused by a forgiving 78-year-old friend and legend.
A longtime family friendship saved and a coaching career rescued.
It never pays to disrespect anyone, much less a 78-year-old. Plus a Coaching Legend.
--

Thanks to my friend Bob Nightengale for his insight on today's Hall of Fame vote.
Plus his thoughts on Gwynn, Ripken, the Braves, and Business Icon Donald Watkins.

The Meck Radio Show - w/ Jay Kearce re Bobby Bowden - Kevin Steele - Jimbo Fisher. 01/05/07
www.TheMeck.com Posted 3:32a.ct. Show Time: 37 Mins.

Meck Notes: Is Jimbo Fisher waffling on Coach Bowden ? [ read below]

OPEN - A visit with my longtime friend, producer and engineeer - David Strickland.
We discuss Nick Saban's Press Conf. at Bama. [ The WOW Factor]
Our thoughts and prayers for our wonderful friend and brother in Radio - Dave Gilligan.
He's in the hospital. We pray he makes a complete recovery .. very soon.
--
[Interv. Jan. 4 - 8p] Meck visits with his family friend, Jay Kearce - The Birdman in Dallas, Tex.
Jay [ Mr. Seminole] is a Florida State alumn and plugged into the FSU pulse.
He talks about his friendship w/ Bobby Bowden and how he helped Coach Bowden with recruits.

'Other than my father, Coach Bowden has been the most influential man in my life.' - Jay Kearce
' I've learned a lot of life lessons from him.' - JK
--
Jay talks about Kevin Steele .. the FSU Executive Head Coach/Linebackers Coach who just joined Coach Saban's staff as Bama's Def. Coordinator.

' It's a big loss for FSU. A big win for Bama.' - JK

'In 2005 - Rivals.com had Kevin Steele as the Number 1 recruiter in the nation.' - JK

'Kevin is as tough as the next guy but he'll pat you on the back and tell you he loves you.'
'He's a fine, fine gentleman. A great football coach and communicator.' - JK
'If Bobby had retired yesterday .. Kevin Steele would have been the next head coach at FSU.' - Jay Kearce

'When Nick Saban took the Dolphins job 2 years ago ..
He offered Kevin Steele a position on his staff and he turned him down.' - JK
--

Jay and The Meck talk about the report Thurs. afternoon [ Jan. 4]on Warchant.com that LSU Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher had agreed to come to Tallahassee.

'Jimbo has a longstanding relationship with the Bowden family.' - JK
[ on staff with Terry at Samford and Auburn]
'Terry Bowden is a key component to this working out.' - JK

Jay says .. 'The whole Jimbo to FSU deal [ in essence] has been done for about 10 days.'
'I know that Nick has already contacted Jimbo about a job at Bama.' - JK

'Once Alabama gets back in the top 5 or 10 .. Kevin Steele will be ready to go.' [Head Coaching Job] - JK
--

11:15p [Jan 4] Jay calls Meck back and says Warchant. com is reporting that Alabama has upped the ante to Jimbo Fisher and he could be waffling on his commitment to Bobby.
According to Warchant.com - Jay says [ this morning Jan. 4] Jimbo called Coach Bowden and said He would be coming to FSU. And he called Coach Saban and told him he wasn't coming to Bama.

Tonite .. Jay is reading Warchant.com to me on the show.
Saban has called Jimbo back tonite [ Jan 4] and sweetened the pot.
[700 thousand to 1 Million - Per Year.]
Depends on what Alabama source you speak with.

Birdman says the FSU/Jimbo offer is about 500 thousand a year.
'Our highest paid asst. is Mickey Andrews at 285 thousand a year.'[ package] - Jay Kearce.
--
So .. What will Jimbo Fisher do ?
It's baffled FSU's credible and legit website - Warchant. com.
Even Jay Kearce - The Birdman.

Final Meck thoughts ..
How much is a longtime friendship worth ? How much is a commitment worth ?
How many people are left on earth who cannot be bought at any price ?
Can you imagine what Terry Bowden's phone call sounded like to Jimbo Fisher tonite.?

It's hard to believe that any amount .. [much less a couple hundred thousand] could ever be enough to justify a Burned Bridge.
If Jimbo doesn't come to his senses soon, [not his centses], He'll run the biggest offensive play of his career.
No Doubt. FSU and Bobby Bowden are his best ticket to be a major college head coach.

Thanks Jay for your insight and scoop on Bobby, Kevin and the Jimbo saga.
This whole deal with Jimbo is hard to follow. [ Even for Christopher Columbus]
The Birdman/Jay Kearce does a great job explaining the chaos and the chase.
Be sure and listen to the interview.

THE MECK REPORT - Kevin Steele to join Saban at Bama. 01/04/07

www.TheMeck.com - posted Jan. 4, 2007 - 12:22p

THE MECK REPORT

Kevin Steele to join Saban at Bama

The Meck has learned that Kevin Steele, the current Executive Head Coach and
Linebackers Coach at Florida State, has accepted a position on the staff with Coach Saban at Alabama.
Steele, a 1981 Tennessee graduate, played for the Big Orange under Johnny Majors.

He won a Nat'l Champ. [1994] serving as Linebackers coach under Tom Osbourne at Nebraska.
He was the linebackers coach for the Carolina Pathers [95 - 99] and then became
head coach at Baylor. [ 1999 - 2002]

He has been on Bobby Bowden's staff since 2003.
Coach Steele is widely known for his outstanding recruiting and some believed
a possible successor to Coach Bowden.
--
Meck observation: With Steele leaving .. this makes perfect sense for Jimbo Fisher's future to become the FSU offensive coordinator and groomed to be the next FSU head coach.

Plus .. It's no secret of the longstanding friendship between Terry Bowden, Jimbo and the Bowden family.
Jimbo was a grad asst. for Terry back at Samford [ plus Offensive coordinator and Quarterbacks coach].
Plus Quarterbacks Coach for Terry Bowden in his undefeated season at Auburn.[1993]
Just an observation by The Meck.

THE MECK REPORT

Meeting between Dolphins owner and Saban

The Meck has learned about today's meeting between Dolphins owner Wayne Huizinga and
Coach Nick Saban [Tuesday in Miami.]
Mr. Huizinga made it clear that he wanted Coach Saban to stay.
The Dolphins owner did not offer any adjustments to the 3 years left on Saban's contract.

Huizinga shared with Saban ..
'With the kind of money Alabama was offering .. He would understand it.'
[if he accepted the offer] ' And support his decision.'
' No hard feelings.'
Saban is leaning towards Alabama and will meet with the Dolphins owner at
10a et - Wed and give him his decision.

Meck Notes:
Meck visits with his friend .. Brother Johnny Fain.
A Preacher who rides a Harley. One Cool Dude 4 Sure.
The man who loves people 'Just As They Are.' Including many outside his church.

We talk about loneliness and depression over the holidays and how you can have Hope.
Especially this week with the high suicide rate - just after Christmas.
--
'Many are going thru a dark time during the glitter of the holidays.'
'It's real to those who are in the midst of it.' - Johnny Fain

Bro. Johnny talks about losing both his parents during the holiday season.
'It took me years to enjoy Christmas again.' - JF

' How do you come thru the reality of it all and escape darkness ?'
- 'What I think often controls the way I live. Your thought process turns inward.
You have thought yourself into that pattern.' - JF

- 'Loneliness is a state of mind.'
'We need to open our mind up and think on truth. What is real.'
'What God says about me. Wonderfully made. I'm OK. Not a Misfit.' - JF

- 'Thankful Where I am. What I have. Make a list. Be Thankful.
A spirit of Thankfulness enables me to receive events and heartaches.'
'Everything that comes into my life can help me.' - JF
--

'Loneliness means turning inward. Thankfulness means turning outward.' - JF

Meck recalls Dr. Jack Llewellyn [ famed sports psychologist] telling him ..
'Make a list. Put down your assets and liabilities. Get back with me.'
I always found the pluses are so much more than the minuses.
If I ever focus there. - Meck

'The more you think about something .. The Larger it becomes.
Keep it where it really is.' - JF

'Embrace them and walk through it .. to travel out of it.' - JF

Bro Johnny shares about a lady who committed suicide.
[ Told by a professional] 'Suicide is when a person can see themselves
in a room where there is no way out [ except that door.]' - JF
--

On reaching out.
'Love them. Don't preach to them or condemn. Spend time with them.
Pray for them. Let them know they're important.' - Johnny Fain.

'If you're lonely .. Make a list of Pros and Cons.
Be thankful. It's not as bad as you think it is.' - JF

'So important to include people into your world.'
'Start reaching out will help you get out of yourself.'
'Getting out there to help someone can help you.' - JF

Bro. Johnny talks about his love for alcoholics.
'Alcoholics are trying to cope just like anyone else on drugs.'
'After a while .. It grabs you.'
'My heart goes out to people who are trying to get their feet to the top of the wall.' - JF

'There's a power in God that can heal you and pull you thru.
Jesus said .. He came to deliver those in captivity.' - Johnny Fain

The Meck asked Bro. Johnny Fain to share today on our show
and to encourage others there is still hope. He did just that.
Thanks Bro. Johnny for your T I M E and reaching out to so many.
