Paul W. Bryant's legacy still lives on, 30 years after his death | TuscaloosaNews.com - Cecil Hurt - “I think there is a public coach Bryant and a private coach Bryant, to an extent,” said Steadman Shealy, the quarterback of Bryant’s final national championship team in 1979. “He taught me lessons that I still use 30 years later, not just what he did to prepare us as players, but what he did to prepare us for life. He prepared you to be a husband, a father, a businessman or whatever. And he lived that way.” - Shealy, who went on to coach on Bryant’s final staff as an assistant, also hosted the coach’s Sunday television show in 1982, taking over the role previously held by Charley Thornton. - Shealy recalled a conversation he had with Bryant as they prepared to tape what would be the final edition of the show. - “He came to me and said, ‘Steadman, I’m retiring. I feel like I am losing my edge, and I don’t want to affect the team.’ He didn’t do it for himself, he did it for others. - “He did so much for others — helping out people who needed it, sneaking into hospitals to visit patients — and no one ever knew about it.”

Paul Finebaum hits highlights from career at Gardendale Chamber banquet, jokes about being off air | al.com - Sarah A. McCarty - "Please excuse me if this speech lasts for five hours cause I really haven't had anything else to work on since Monday night," Finebaum said. He continued the string of jokes throughout, including thanking Gardendale for giving him somewhere to go. ---- Finebaum said. "About a year after we started on satellite, we got a call one day from a guy in Iowa. And I must admit I wasn't really sure what he was talking about. Then we got a call a second time and by the third time, we all started paying close attention and we all began to understand him a lot better." - Finebaum was speaking of frequent caller Robert of Waterloo, Iowa. Robert is 33 years old, has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. Finebaum eventually flew out to visit Robert. - "It was the most remarkable experience," Finebaum said. "As we drove down the street, everyone had put! ! out their Iowa Hawkeye black and gold flags. We got in the house. It reminded me of growing up. The mom had deviled eggs and fried chicken and all the food out. We just had the greatest time. We took Robert to a sports bar. And the parents told me it was the greatest day of his life. You think about what you can do to help someone, and I thought to myself, this is remarkable."

Paul Finebaum's Best Calls : The New Yorker - Reeves Weideman - In this week’s magazine, I wrote about Paul Finebaum, a sports talk-radio host in Birmingham whose show has become the voice of college football in Alabama, and throughout much of the South. But Finebaum is merely the lead tenor among the often cacophonous chorus made up of his regular callers, whom he admits are the show’s stars. Many of them are capable of clear, coherent arguments. Others, less so. “I’ve never heard, even in Pentecostal worship services, the sort of excess of spirit you hear on the Paul Finebaum show,” Wayne Flynt, an emeritus professor of history at Auburn University, and football season-ticket holder, told me. “For someone not versed in football, they would probably describe it as speaking in tongues.” Clay Travis, a radio host in Nashville who occasionally appears on the show to battle with Finebaum’s callers, put it another way: “It’s basically an entertaining bar conversation with people that you’d never want to drink a beer with.” - That may be so, but after several months of listening to the show, I find myself still coming back to the bar, hoping that my favorite regulars stop by. Below are clips—warning, foul language ahead—from the show’s most prominent, and notorious, callers:
