www.TheMeck.com Posted 4:22a Show Time: 28 mins.

Meck Notes:
Thanks for downloading our show.
An interview w/ Bobby Cox - Manager of the Atlanta Braves.
A longtime friend and Best Mgr. in the game shares his insight - weekly.
Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY has said several times on our show:
" Bobby Cox is the Greatest Manager in the History of Baseball."
No Doubt .. The Facts confirm Bob Nightengale's view.
Bobby Cox: The only man in the history of sports to win 15 consecutive division titles.

The Sporting News, in a poll of his peers, has named Bobby Cox - Manager of the Year - 8 times.
Since 1936, when the magazine started balloting .. No other manager has won the award more than 3 times.

Several weeks ago Bobby passed Mgr. Sparky Anderson [ 2,194] to become 4th all-time in wins.
The Hall of Fame will come calling one day - 1st ballot - 4 sure.
--
Tuesday [ June 19th] ..The Meck gave Skipper Bobby Cox a call and as always he had TIME.
I'm grateful for Bobby's friendship and Thank him for agreeing to do our show weekly.

Seg 1 is my friend BIG JIM Kearce sharing his thoughts on Bobby Cox.
Followed by my interv with Bobby.

I asked Bobby about Smoltz's shoulder and his upcoming start Fri. nite vs Kenny Rogers [ DET].
His thoughts on the amazing start of Willie Harris and the talented rookie -Yunel Escobar.

The bullpen: Soriano - Wickman - Yates.
How are Chipper's hands ?
--

Bobby's thoughts on the late Haywood Sullivan ?
1st round pick of the Red Sox[ in 52] - Made the Majors [in 60] - Red Sox catcher.
Managed the KC Athletics [1965 ] .. Red Sox GM [1978 - 83 ] and General Partner/Owner [ 1977 - 93].

Bobby says hello to Mr. Sullivan's daughter, Sharon, in Boston and calls him:
" A True Gentleman. One of the Hard Working .. Nice Guys in Baseball."

Of Note: After doing an article w/ Bob Nightengale on the life/memories of Mr. Sullivan
[when he passed away Feb. 2003 and was laid to rest in my hometown - Dothan] ..
I believe Haywood Sullivan is the only man to be a player - manager - general manager and
owner in Major League history. - Meck
--
Bobby reaches out to a soldier, Mark McDuffie, a friend and longtime loyal listener
[who was injured in Iraq and is recovering at Walter Reed Hospital].
Bobby sends well wishes [to Mark] via the show.
He's looking forward to meeting him [at a Braves game] and shaking his hand.

Thanks for your TIME today and listening to our show with Bobby Cox - MR. ENCOURAGER.
Bobby's kindness and the compassion he gives others will long outlive his Hall of Fame Stats.
As I've shared with Bobby .. ' If I ever go to the electric chair .. I want to have my last meal with you.
At least I'll have a smile on my face and feel good about it.'

A Special Thanks to Super Dave in New York for putting our show together [ as always].
And Thank You for sharing the show with a friend.

Meck Notes:
Thanks for downloading our show.
A revealing interview w/ Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.
A longtime friend and frequent guest who will continue to join us as he follows Bonds' chase of 755.
Excerpt .. The quote by Jason Giambi that has struck a nerve with Major League Baseball.
USA TODAY interv w/ Bob Nightengale ..

"I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi said. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up — players, ownership, everybody — and said: 'We made a mistake.' "

MLB and the Yankees were most angered by Giambi's insinuation that baseball ignored its steroid problem, according to the two baseball officials.

Kevin V. Ryan, the former U.S. attorney whose office questioned Giambi before the grand jury, told USA TODAY on Sunday: "I think Giambi should get a lot of credit and be applauded for his honesty and courage. He's standing up and owning up to an issue that should be talked about."

May 20, 2007 - excerpts from USATODAY.com -' MLB seeks steroid sitdown with Giambi, officials say.'

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/al/yankees/2007-05-20-giambi-mlb_N.htm

-- Meck opens the show with close friend - BIG JIM Kearce.
Bob Nightengale joins Meck from Southern Calif. to talk about the firestorm this Giambi quote has caused.
We talk about the Giambi interview he did plus the denial among MLB and the suspicions
of steroids back to the 80's.
'Crowds chanting - Steroids .. Steroids '

Re the Giambi quote hitting a nerve with MLB ..
'They don't want to hear that they cover stuff up .. and didn't want to admit it.' - BN

Do you believe the owners and officials had some [steroid] suspicions back in '98 during
the McGwire, Sosa and Bonds era ?
'I don't think there's a soul in baseball that didn't have suspicions [ back to the 80's].' - BN
--
It seems MLB - the Yankees and the Commissioner are playing the high moral road
[re Giambi all of a sudden] with the Bonds record coming up ..?
'It reminds me of the Mets clubhouse kid [Kirk Radomski ] when he came out talking steroids and going to name names.
All of a sudden the Mets players couldn't remember him [and he'd been in the clubhouse for 10 years].'- BN

Can MLB really suspend Giambi ?
'No .. I don't see how.'
' He's never failed a drug test' .. Bob points out.

They'll probably tell him to 'keep your mouth shut.' [ 'Just like they told Sheffield re the Mitchell investigation].' - BN

' All [Giambi] was saying is Baseball should apologize.'
' I think that struck a nerve.' - BN

It's worth noting and remembering.
The Yanks have already tried to void Giambi's contract after his Balco testimony was leaked from the Grand Jury in 2003.
It didn't happen then and it won't happen now. - Meck
--
Meck talks with Bob re more pitchers being suspended for steroids than hitters.
'Guys throwing 88 mph in the minors .. all of a sudden throwing 100 mph in the majors.'
'Some are 40-50-60 round picks .. Scouts aren't missing that bad.' - BN

'It's not humanly possible to increase your fastball 5-6 mph when you're in your upper 30's.' - BN
--
Meck and Bob discuss Hank Aaron and Commissioner Bud Selig.
Shouldn't they attend the Bonds' record breaker for Home Runs.? [ 756]

Shouldn't it be about The Game and not any individual ?

'If Babe Ruth was alive .. he'd been there for Aaron.' - BN
'I think Players will tell you .. he [ Aaron] should be there.' - BN

Re the Commissioner of Baseball.
Shouldn't he be there for the record ??

Bob shares his thoughts on this hot topic.
--
'If the Commissioner of Baseball doesn't show [ for the HR Record]
I believe he should resign.' - Meck
--
Meck and Bob discuss Glavine vs. Smoltz [ Thurs nite].
Glav going for win 296 .. Smoltz for his 200th win.
2 Hall of Fame Pitchers.

Plus the sale of the Braves to Liberty Media.
Bob talks about the NL East. 'Braves and Mets best teams in the NL'. - BN

He still calls Bobby Cox - 'The Greatest Manager in the history of baseball.'
' I'll believe it all the way to my grave.' - BN
--
Thanks Bob for your insight today .. especially on this controversial [hush-hush] subject - steroids.
We appreciate you shining light [ truth] on this dark issue.

The cover-up/denial seems to always cost more than the original problem.
Jason Giambi is exactly right .. Baseball should apologize.
He struck a nerve and exposed them with his remorse.
MLB should stop hiding behind the curtain of denial.

Thanks for listening to this informative show and sharing it with a friend.

The Meck Radio Show w/ Dr. Jim Reese - Supt. of Enterprise Schools. 05/09/07
www.TheMeck.com Posted 5:06a Show Time: 42 mins.

Meck Notes:
Thanks for downloading our show.
An in-depth interview w/ Dr. Jim Reese - Supt. of Enterprise Schools.
It was a privelege to visit with Supt. Jim Reese and his asst. Bob Tomberlin. [ May 2]
Their offices are attached to the devastated Enterprise [ AL] High School.
EHS is adjacent to Hillcrest Elementary which was also severely damaged by the tornado.

Dr. Reese was born and raised in Enterprise.
He's been in the school system for many years and became Superintendent in 2001.
--
We stood in the 1st hall as he began to share about that horrible day .. March 1st, 2007.
He talks about the parents who were waiting to pick students up at 1pm.

Dr. Reese talks about his day beginning at 7am talking with the EMA.
He canceled a meeting at Wallace College plus a meeting w/ the Enterprise
mayor so he could stay in his office and monitor the bad weather.

After talking with the EMA and other school officials ..
Dr. Reese made the decision between 9:30 and 10a to dismiss schools at 1p.
At 10:30a - Tornado warning issued .. All students are moved to the halls.

At 1p .. the tornado warning is still in effect.
Schools are not dismissed during a tornado warning.
Dr. Reese hears a WDHN report .. A tornado is near Enterprise [and the High School].
[ Tornado hits EHS at aprox 1:10].
--
We walk down the hall and there was The Wildcat.
Flashback: Mar 3, 2007 .. SGA Pres. Megan Parks reminded Pres Bush .. 'Don't step on The Wildcat.'
If he had .. You wonder if Megan would have asked The Pres. to 'scrub it with a toothbrush.'
--
Dr. Reese takes me by the science hall.
This wing is flattened and 80-100 students all made it out alive.
It's very still and quiet. Struggling to try and comprehend what happen here.
Dr. Reese tells about the brave, pregnant science teacher who saved students.

We arrive at the 3rd hall .. where 8 young lives were taken by a tornado
with 170 - 180 mph winds.
I will forever remember the lockers ending suddenly .. and then the concrete and re-bar ..
the walls and ceiling stacked in front of me [ for about 25 ft]
and only sky above me.

Dr. Reese told me ..' Meck .. Right here [ pointing a foot away] is where they
pulled the last body out at 12:47am.'
I'll never forget the devastation I saw and the pain I heard in his voice.

I'll always remember what was written and drawn on a chalkboard that stood alone ..
reflecting a bit of light/hope on this dark 3rd hall.
The sun was shining down on a cross with the words: 'For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.'
I had to pause. I was trying to imagine that day.

Dr. Reese picked up a brick and gave it to me .. so I would remember the 3rd hall and the 8 lives lost.
They are building a memorial with the bricks to always remember these young, beautiful lives.

RYAN MOHLER - 17, JR.
MICHAEL BOWEN - 16, JR.
MICHELLE WILSON - 16, SOPH.
PETER DUNN - 16, JR.
JAMIE VIDENSEK - 17, SR.
--
Dr. Reese thanks the many responders that day .. firefighters .. doctors .. nurses .. and the many brave teachers and students who saved fellow students.

He talks about the many who have given and helped.
They've even received checks from people in Japan and other countries.
He thanks Paul Finebaum, Coach Nick Saban and the many who have reached out.
He seems really appreciative of the 'rival schools' [ Dothan, Northview, Auburn] and others
who wore The Wildcat Blue to pay tribute to his alma mater - EHS.

Dr. Reese thanks John G. Ralls [ of Andalusia] who sold them 140 acres to relocate and rebuild EHS.
Mr. Ralls is giving 600 thousand dollars [ from the purchase] back to the Enterprise School system.
Hillcrest Elementary will be rebuilt at its current location [ adjacent to the current EHS].

Dr. Reese talks about the monies coming in and the 70 - 75 million needed to rebuild
both Enterprise High School and Hillcrest Elementary.
Plus they also must build a new football stadium.

32 million by the State.
20 - 25 million by insurance.
.. ?? ... by FEMA.
70 - 75 million dollars needed [ for both schools].
--
There is great hope for this wonderful town .. The City of Progress.
Their future is so bright .. They gotta wear shades.
I really believe that.

Enterprise Schools has a School Board and a School Supt.
that have one agenda only .. the students.
The board is appointed [ not elected].

No doubt they've been chosen at this special time in history [ to rebuild the school and many lives].
As Dr. Jim Reese said to me .. ' We have a vision for our students ..
In 50 years we want people to look back and say .. 'They really knew what they were doing.'

Believe me .. They really do know what they are doing in Enterprise [and have for a long time].
The City of Progress/Hope.
One of the top School Systems in the Nation. They will rebuild the schools and the stadium.
And most of all .. the lives.

After walking the EHS halls that are shredded apart ..
It's Beyond a Miracle to me that hundreds weren't killed
on Thursday Mar. 1st, 2007 at 1:10p.
Even after you see it .. You still can't believe it.
--
Note: The Enterprise High School Students currently go to school
at Enterprise-Ozark Community College [ Mon-Thurs. 12:30p - 5:30p]
and Friday is a normal schedule. [ I believe]
Dr. Reese said the New EHS should be ready in aprox. 3 yrs.
Hillcrest Elementary in about 2 years.

THE MECK RADIO SHOW w/ Bob Nightengale - USA Today Baseball Writer 04/20/07

A longtime, loyal listener writes ..
----- Original Message -----
From: "Mark McDuffie"
To: <

Subject: Hello

Mr. Meck,

I finally found you again. I am originally from Geneva, AL and use to
listen to The Coach and The Meck every night when you were on the air. I
think it was 103.9. I had the honor of meeting you at the P-Nut Festival
one year and you took me to your van and gave me a T-Shirt. "It's Time to
Smell The Cornfields Baby" I will never forget it. I wore the shirt to
school and my buddies would always ask how did you get that shirt man? I
would always say I have connections.

I graduated in 1997 and joined the U.S. Air Force.
I was stationed in Oklahoma, Japan and currently in Ft.Walton Beach, FL.
Nothing like the south.

I was wounded on 2 March 2007 in Iraq by an IED and currently healing at
Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C.
I was looking through the internet and I found you and information on
your new show. I just wanted to share my story with you, so I decided to
email you.

I always respected you for what you believed in and how you
expressed yourself. I remembered a quote from you that went like this "
It's not how you start the game of life, but how you finish it. That is so
true. God has a plan for me and tells us in the bible that he will allow us
to prosper. I don't always understand why I got hurt, but I know god has a
plan for me and I look forward to seeing his new plan for me when I am out
of the hospital and back home in the South. Mr. Meck I want to Thank You
for a few minutes of your time and I look forward to downloading some of
your radio shows. Take care and God Bless.

Thanks,
Mark McDuffie

Please pray for our longtime listener and friend .. Mark McDuffie.
A Brave young man and soldier.
Mark .. Thanks for sharing and blessing our lives.

You may email Mark [ themeck@themeck.com] . We'll forward your thoughts to him.

Bob talks about pitcher Randy Johnson and he'll soon be ready to go for Arizona.
Calls Randy 'A Great Baseball Historian.'
--
Meck talks w/ Bob about Barry Bonds breaking Aaron's HR Record.
Bob says it 'might be overshadowed by A-Rod breaking Barry's single-season record.' [ 73]

Don't you think A-Rod will break Bonds' and Aaron's record ?
'He'll surpass both of them. No reason in the world why he shouldn't be the HR King.' - BN

[ A-Rod ..Alex Rodriguez currently has 474 HR's.]

Why is Aaron planning not to attend the record breaking HR by Bonds ..?
--
Talk about Tom Glavine as he approaches 300 wins.
'A definite Hall of Famer.'
'He embraces the media.'
'Glavine could be a pitching coach, general manager, or maybe a broadcaster [ weekly].' - BN.

[Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux] ' 3 Hall of Famers in the same rotation.'
'Plus a Hall of Fame Mgr.' - BN

You said on this show before 'Bobby Cox is the greatest manager in the history of baseball ..'
Do you still believe that ?
'Most definitely .. No one's done what he [ Bobby] has.' - BN

Will Andruw Jones stay in Atlanta ??
Bob talks about Scott Boras and his thoughts on Andruw.
'Andruw will set the market price followed by Ichiro.' - BN

Bob picks the Braves to win the East [ followed by the Mets and Phillies].

The Meck has learned that John Powell and the city have FINALLY decided to give Lt. Duane Herring ventilation for the Retaliation utility closet in the jail that he was moved to last Sept.

POWELL'S RETALIATION
Lt. Herring [almost 23 yrs in the Dothan PD] was retaliated against by John Powell - Chief of Police
because the local union [International Brotherhood of Police Officers]
voted to send a letter to Atty. Gen. Troy King asking the AG to investigate
Chief Powell for ticket fixing allegations. [ criminal activity]

Lt. Herring is Vice Pres. of the local IBPO.
Then union Pres Steve Hamm [under pressure from Powell] pointed the finger at Lt. Herring
as being the architect of the letter.
The letter was actually written by then union attorney Banks Smith.

Timeline: The AG's office confirmed receipt of the union letter in late Aug 06.
Mid September [Less than a month] Lt. Herring was moved by Powell to the Retaliation Jail Utility Closet.

Note: The city says they don't recognize the IBPO. The IBPO has thousands of members nationwide.
Just because you don't believe something exist .. does not eliminate its existence. [ Just ask Chester]
If you don't believe in gravity .. Try jumping. The law still exist.
You might not believe in a certain law or a noise ordinance .. but it still exist.
You might not believe you have an alcohol/drinking problem. That Denial confirms the problem/existence.

Denial is the prelude for ultimate problems.
Just like the city has today.

JOHN WHITE'S BIG CHILL
Chief John White Esquire exposed John Powell - Chief of Retaliation and his brilliant Deputy..
Larry 'Jethro Bo ' Draughon and drilled the city leadership with embarrassment and
shamed them in a 7 hour hearing/teaching session Monday pm.

Less than 12 hrs later .. Workers started measuring and have started drilling through the security wall in the Dothan City jail to give Lt. Duane Herring [what the Animal Shelter has] and he
hasn't had for the last seven months - Ventilation.

Since Chief John White Esquire put a chill on John Powell and the city leadership ..
[and left them on a ventilator]
The word is Lt. Herring might even by-pass a fan and get some AC in the Retaliation Jail Utility Closet.

The security wall at the jail is reinforced with concrete and steel.
How much will this cost the city to try and continue to cover-up the obvious retaliation by Powell ?

THE COVER-UP
It would be so easy for Powell and the city to admit their mistakes and move Lt Herring
from the Retaliation Utility Jail Closet .. into an humane environment where he can work without
jail inmates banging on the glass window screaming at him and Lt. Herring having to evacuate the
utility closet for 2 days because of pepper spray [ that was used on an inmate].

As we've all seen in life .. It's always the cover-up that you always pay the most for.
The retaliation and now the cover-up will probably cost the City of Dothan millions as the city leadership continues to back John Powell - Chief of Retaliation.

It will cost John Powell his job.
He should have already been fired by CM Mike West ..
but the CM has a hard time admitting he blew this hire - BIG TIME.

John Powell must be removed as Police Chief. Today.
He has destroyed our police dept and is ruining our city.
He is not qualified to be a Police Chief. [That's not exactly breaking news from Christopher Columbus.]

Thanks for forwading THE MECK REPORT to your friends ..

Meck Notes:
Mon. nite [ Jan 15, 1996] Brad Delp and Javy Lopez drew over
5 thousand people at the Holiday Inn South [ Dothan Al ].
They were wrapped around the motel and down 231 South [ in the misting rain].

Brad and Javy signed autographs as we did the radio show together.
Several Brad Delp fans drove from New Orleans to meet him [ 6 hrs one way].
Javy gave Brad an autographed jersey. Brad gave Javy an autographed guitar.
They both rocked my hometown. Wonderful memories.

Chief John White estimated the record crowd at 5 thousand plus.
Noting that Javy and Brad even outdrew Pres. Reagan's 1986 visit to Dothan.
I'm grateful they both came to my hometown.

We will miss Brad Delp for A Long Time.
His heavenly voice that lifted our spirits and most of
all his compassion, kindness and TIME he gave us all.

I'll never be the same .. because of Brad Delp's life.

Be sure and watch this 5 min. clip as we continue our
Wonderful/Long Time Memories of Brad Delp.

Meck,
I want to thank you for the wonderful, heart felt article you wrote in remembrance of my friend Brad.

From the minute he met you in Atlanta, you were part of his lexicon, part of his life, a friend. We would often fondly recall "The Meck", your heart and your kindness. He would always look forward to the southeast shows, as that meant he'd visit with you again.

It meant a lot to Brad when you invited him to the ballpark in Atlanta, and we all had a memorable time. You took such good care of us, like we were family, although we had known you for just a day. I have great photos of that event taken by Walter, the legendary Braves official photographer.

You have a wonderful heart Meck, and you made an impression on Brad. Whenever we spoke of The Meck, we would smile and a story or two would ensue, always punctuated with an enthusiastic "It's Time To Smell The Cornfields, Baby"!

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our friend in a very private ceremony in New Hampshire.
Again, thanks for your heartfelt remembrance.

Best Regards,

Bill Faulkner

Message from Tom Scholz - posted on www.bandboston.com
As you all know by now, BOSTON'S lead singer, Brad Delp, was found
dead in his home on Friday, March 9th 2007. Plans for live BOSTON performances this summer have, of course, been cancelled.

My heart goes out to his wonderful fiance Pamela, his two children and other family members, his close friends
and band mates, and to the millions of people whose lives were made a little brighter by the sound of his voice.
He will be dearly missed. -- Tom Scholz

Brad had TIME for everyone. The Greatest gift you can give anyone.

Thanks to Brad's close friend, Bill Faulkner, for reaching out and connecting with me.

T I M E spells L O V E

T I M E spells L O V E

Throw me the ball Daddy
I've been waiting all day
I'm so glad you're home and we got some time
So Let's go out and play
Just me and you
It's my favorite thing to do
Daddy I'm tellin' the truth

Chorus
T I M E time
Spells L O V E love
And Love is the one thing
This world needs more of
The choice is up to you
So what will you do
With your T I M E Time
and your L O V E love

I'll never forget you Daddy
You taught me the game so well
It's taken me places I never dreamed
So many stories to tell
How the time has come and gone
And now I have a son of my own
And I'm making sure your memory lives on

Bridge
I've heard it said a time or two
This game of life can take from you
But I found out love isn't really love
Till you give it away
