Governor Robert Bentley cannot seem to keep his lies straight. He is trying so desperately to cover his tracks. This is an impossible job because Bentley's scheme to defraud Alabama taxpayers and campaign donors has violated virtually every aspect of Alabama's campaign finance laws (and a host of federal anti-corruption laws as well).
As we first reported on an exclusive basis on September 18, 2015, Mike Echols, Bentley’s long-time personal CPA and heavy hitting moneyman for the Robert Bentley Campaign Committee, split from the governor last summer. Echols, who handled the financial books and records for both the Bentleys and the Campaign Committee, resigned his post over a heated disagreement with Bentley involving the governor's scheme to funnel cash to his lover, Rebekah Caldwell Mason, through a series of illegal money laundering transactions.
Bentley's request did not sit well with Echols, a respected Tuscaloosa accountant and well-known PAC organizer. During the heated exchange between the two men, Echols refused the governor’s request and turned over the various checkbooks and financial records in his custody to Bentley. With this handover, the professional relationship between Echols and Bentley ended.
Echols has been Bentley’s personal accountant for many years. He was also the Campaign Committee’s accountant in 2010 and 2014.
Echols saved himself from criminal liability by breaking away from Bentley rather than implementing the governor's illegal money laundering scheme.
After the split with Echols, Bentley started writing his own checks, including the ones designed to cover up his illegal actions with Rebekah. Bentley is a hands-on criminal whose affair with Rebekah is cloaked in a web of deception and drenched in criminal conduct.
Bentley is the "ringleader" of an ongoing criminal enterprise operating straight out of the governor's office.

Trapped in a Tangled Web of Deception - By Donald V. Watkins - Investigators have confirmed that Robert Bentley was running an ongoing criminal enterprise out of the governor's office. Just like former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who is serving a 28-year federal prison sentence, Bentley was engaged in widespread racketeering activities and was the "ring leader" of this criminal enterprise. The two lovers did not stop at trading power for sex. They also split cash that Rebekah earned as a "consultant" who could provide third parties with direct access to the governor. Some of this cash was reportedly stashed away in a safe deposit box that only Bentley and Rebekah could access.
