Birds of a Feather Flock Together - By Donald V. An overwhelming majority of people in Alabama want Governor Bentley to resign in the wake of his embarrassing "sex for power" and public corruption scandal with lover Rebekah Caldwell Mason. He has refused to do so.
The Anniston Star and AL.com are supporting Bentley. The Tuscaloosa News and Montgomery Advertiser have demanded his resignation. Federal prosecutors are expected to bring criminal charges against Bentley, Mason, and others in the near future.
An impeachment resolution was introduced in the Alabama House of Representatives earlier this week. A majority of legislators in the House and Senate want the resolution killed.
If the legislator who represents your House or Senate District is silent on this matter, or opposes this impeachment effort, his/her silence or opposition can only mean one of three things: (a) he/she is also involved is some kind of undisclosed "dark money" money laundering scheme with a secret lover; (b) he/she also has a secret mistress, lover, girlfriend or boy toy on the state's payroll; or (c) he/she finds it totally acceptable to cheat on one's spouse using taxpayer's money to underwrite the illicit affair. Like Bentley, these legislators are compromised and corrupted to the bone. They are nothing more than "political whores" who scream "family values" at election time because this phrase sounds good to voters.
What is fascinating is this: No legislator has offered a public defense of Bentley. Privately, however, many of them have said there is nothing wrong with what Bentley and Mason did. A bipartisan majority of legislators want this impeachment resolution to go way. This includes members of the black legislative caucus who, as a group, have rarely represented the political interests of their constituents.
At the end of the day, "Birds of a feather flock together". These legislators have NO minimum standards of decency and ethics in government. Mike Hubbard, the Speaker of the House, championed ethics reform during the 2010 elections. Yet, he is awaiting trial on 23 felony counts of public corruption. Hubbard was overwhelmingly re-elected as Speaker after his indictment in 2014. This explains a lot.
We must punish all pro-Bentley legislators at the polls during the 2018 election cycle. Bentley has made Alabama the laughingstock of the nation. Our legislators should not be covering for Bentley; they should be respecting the will of Alabama voters who are demanding a higher standard of decency, transparency, and ethics in government. We should use all means necessary to see to it that those legislators who protect Bentley get booted out of the legislature when their current term in office expires in January 2019.
