Bentley is trapped in a no-win situation. Right now, Bentley is a desperate criminal who has taken the people of Alabama as hostages. Members of the legislature, who share his lifestyle, have formed a human shield around him. The only chance of liberating the hostages rests with federal prosecutors. I understand that the criminal charges against Bentley will exceed ninety felony counts, and this number is based on just what they know today. The Feds are going to arrest Bentley in the governor's office to send a strong and clear message of disapproval to other rogue governors who might dare to take an entire state as hostages when they are caught breaking the law. The Feds are not interested in a plea deal with Bentley. He has shown no remorse for his crimes and he continues with his ongoing racketeering activities. Bentley has excellent legal representation by Montgomery attorney Joe Espy, who is a very skilled white-collar criminal lawyer. Espy's legal fees are paid from Bentley's campaign funds, which is a practice we intend to stop with new campaign reform legislation.
