Texas A&M's break from the Big 12 arrived Wednesday morning, the next mile marker in its quest to join the Southeastern Conference.

The university announced in a news release that it would conditionally withdraw from the Big 12 and, upon acceptance into another league, end its affiliation with the Big 12 on June 30, 2012. That means Texas A&M will be able to join the SEC for the 2012 football season if it is accepted.

Since Texas A&M officials reached out to SEC officials in late July and met with them a week later, the Aggies' intentions have been obvious. And since a meeting of SEC presidents in Atlanta in mid-August to discuss the admission of A&M, it has been clear that the move was expected to happen as long as Texas A&M maneuvered properly and protected the SEC from being sued by the Big 12.

"This is a 100-year decision that we have addressed carefully and methodically," Texas A&M's president, R. Bowen Loftin, said.

Texas A&M and the Big 12 still have not settled on the terms of a buyout, which is expected to be in the neighborhood of $15 million.
